I dunno, I think the way it works for now, in the English speaking world is once the REH yarns are in the public domain you can only reprint the actual yarns.

Not giving legal advice, but using the Sherlock Holmes decision as a basis and the Supreme Court's opinion on trademarks not extending copyright.....it seems anyone can write Conan yarns as long as they stick to the aspects of the character in the public domain stories. There have been a few already, the Robert M. Price and Belit pastiche are two off the top of my head. I also suspect Ablaze applied this theory for their Belit and Valeria abomination, since both ladies appeared in public domain Conan yarns. But since none of the Kull or Solomon Kane yarns have entered the public domain, I don't see how those two can be used.

When will the Conan yarns by REH be in the Public Domain in the US - I'm guessing the 1st yarn will be Phoenix on the Sword around December 2027?

As of now, the 95 year "rule" is still in place so Dec 2027 will be the start. However with Steamboat Willie approaching PD this November, let's see if Iger tries anything. They've made numerous changes in the past but this time, it'll likely fall on deaf (mouse) ears. Now the Kull and Kane stories have gone PD overseas, correct? I would suspect they're trying to use the Belit & Valeria logic to Kull but since he's a main character (and likely trademarked), it's probably way more complicated.

I think if Disney wanted to try anything they'd have tried by now. Given the Sherlock Holmes decision and the Supreme Court's opinion on mutant copyright law, they probably saw the writing on the wall. Also, they didn't challenge Winnie the Pooh last year.

They seem to be quite confident with this new series, it's even on this month's cover of the Diamond Previews Catalog.

When I saw King Kull at the end of Marvel's CONAN: SERPENT WAR mini-series, my heart honestly soared. It was so wonderful. I love the character so much, wish we could have seen more of him......

So, I read the first two issues of this new series now.
tldr: Better than Belit & Valeria, very simple though
They are going for an Avengers style group but for S&S instead of superheroes, just like they promised in the advertising text. Issue #1 is about the team coming together - just one issue is a lot for five characters but it serves its purpose. Issue #2 gets into the main action. The story structure so far is extremely simple but the art is good and so is the writing of the individual scenes. It's overall way better than Belit & Valeria and can recommend it to anyone looking for something new on Kull. We'll see how he develops over this series, at least we meet Brule, Thongor and mythological characters like Morgan le Fay and Anansi. The June previews include "Mighty Barbarians #5" and on one of the covers it says number "5 of ?", so either this means it will be a longer series and they don't know the last issue number yet or they just don't want to tell yet. Let's see!

I am not thrilled about story lines involving characters coming together to save the world, but this is sort of okay...I guess. The writing is pretty bad at times, not Howard nor purple prose, just sort of modern. Modern and mediocre. Characters are a bit thin and the story so far( I've only read two issues so far) is simple and unoriginal. It's okay though, nice to have a comic with Kull as the lead.

Thanks for your reviews, guys.
Is this explicitly REH's Kull? Any pinpoint references to Howard's work?
Or is it just a generic reference to Atlantis and axes?

It generally takes place in Kull's world, so Valusia and Atlantis, some of the things Kull has done are brought up as well. I am on issue 4 now, I do not recommend it.
