The REH Foundation Forum? Not that I know of. It's been nearly 3 years since this temporary forum has been active At least the community from the old board is surviving in some form here. If anyone has come across my posts, you have probably figured out I have a fascination with history. That includes even things like the history of this forum and the earlier one. I find it fascinating that this is the "temporary" forum to the old one, and that the old one seems to have two names: "The REH Foundation Forum" and the "Conan Forum." So, I did some historical sleuthing and discovered the old forum did fall under the two different names even though it was clearly the same URL. Using the Wayback Machine - which I find really fascinating to search (more history) - I found these two captures. Here is one for the Official Robert E. Howard Foundation Forum: web.archive.org/web/20110813022731/http://www.conan.com/invboard/And here is one for the Conan Forums: web.archive.org/web/20060615061850/http://www.conan.com/invboard/So, I have a historical question: Why did the old forum close?

The owner/Cabinet? was tired of supporting it and supposedly had better ideas for the URL. That was conan.com. The Foundation was supposed to set up a forum but it has not ever materialized.
I was just a lurker there so I may have some of the facts wrong.

Thanks charleshelm! That clears things up. So, they wanted the domain name back to use for commercial stuff, which does kind of make sense. It is an easy URL to remember. And setting up the forum on an existing website takes work, so I can see why the "temporary" forum ended up being created here on proboards and why it has become rather permanent.

Yeah, that's a silver lining, but it's still unfortunate we lost that huge library of past discussions. I mean, setting up a new forum isn't super difficult, so if this REH Foundation Forum hasn't come into being after three years, I'm inclined to think it's not coming at all.

And although I'm really just starting to get caught up with about 2 years worth of msg traffic on this site, I saw Spartan's post and had to put in my 2 farthings. I was involved in the recent mass exodus of a number of groups from Yahoogroups to groups.io, and I found that there is software available for a free trial called "PG Offline 4" that allows one to download all the data archives from Yahoogroups and then upload them to the group's new site on groups.io . I would assume that when the old, original REH forum was discontinued that someone would have saved the old messages. Maybe they are still there on the original site? If you can get in touch with the original owner, might it be possible to get the message archives and other data files transferred and then upload all that to this site? I am sure that there is a lot there that would be nice to have. Given the psychological malaise so rampant thanks to the nasty coronavirus, I came across the 1982 *Conan the Barbarian* on a Canadian movie channel a couple of days ago and figured that it would uplift my spirit - and I was right. I watched that and enjoyed it so much that I even managed to sit through *Conan the Destroyer* (ugh! ) immediately afterward. So now I'm back on a new REH kick and looking forward to catching up on movies, collectibles, Conan stories that I've read before, and all the dozens of REH stories that I've never read. Plus the collection of REH bios and his correspondence with H.P. Lovecraft which has been sitting in my TBR pile for ages. Glad to be back! Stay well! Johanne T. (aka Valeriaspirit)

(aka Valeriaspirit) Welcome valeriaspirit, good to have you back. It's been a long time. The old forum was a vbulletin database which had grown very large over the years. So I guess it would depend on compatibility and or export/import facilities? I'm no database guy though.

So I guess it would depend on compatibility and or export/import facilities? I'm no database guy though. Hi, Von K! Too long! But I've been busy - mostly caring for my elderly dog Holli with mobility issues, and I did present a paper on JRR Tolkien's love of trees to the Tolkien 2019 conference of the Tolkien Society last August. That was a gas! But now I'm in a mood to travel to a different realm of the imagination - Howard's rather than Tolkien's. I love both! I'm not a database person either. I found out about PG Offline 4 and found that it was fairly simple to use. But looking at the website (here: www.personalgroupware.com ), it appears that it is designed specifically to deal with Yahoogroups data files. So in all likelihood it wouldn't do for a vbulletin database. I guess a start would be to find out if someone either kept the data files from the old conan.com website or if the files might still be there somewhere. If they still exist, it seems to me that that it should be possible to download them and save them and hopefully get them either uploaded here or to a dedicated server which the members here could access. There must be a LOT of people out there who know a LOT more than I do, and if someone wants to take on this project, I would be glad to offer moral support! :-) Johanne T. (aka valeriaspirit)

Welcome back, Valeriaspirit. Thanks, hun! (Sounds like I'm talking to my hubby. ) I'm going to be looking through the old message threads to see if there is anything pertaining to the bios on REH, as my current project is to attempt to read them, starting with *Dark Valley Destiny,* the one by L. Sprague de Camp and his wife, as I've already read *One Who Walked Alone* by Novalyne Price Ellis (and seen the wonderful movie, which starred Vincent d'Onofrio as REH and Renee Zellwegger as Novalyne), and I seem to recall that she had talked to the de Camps but was disappointed in the resulting product and wanted to present a more well-rounded (and sympathetic?) profile of REH. She succeeded beautifully, I think, and I love the movie. valeriaspirit

You should also read Mark Finn's Blood & Thunder: The Life & Art of Robert E. Howard Hi, terryallenuk! That book is also in my TBR pile, along with Glenn Lord's *The Last Celt* and *Two-Gun Bob* (which is not a bio but a series of critical essays, of course). And I also have and am looking forward to reading the two volumes of *A Means to Freedom,* containing the HP Lovecraft-REH correspondence. And I'm going to try to re-read *One Who Walked Alone* and to watch the movie again, which should not be a difficult task. If I can manage to do all of that, I figure I will have a pretty balanced (and hopefully accurate) picture of REH in the end.

Hi, All - Just a quickie to note that I have read about 3 chapters into *Dark Valley Destiny* - the de Camp bio - and am finding it . . . an annoying read so far. The de Camps persist in psychoanalyzing REH and his parents to the max, and I can't help but suspect that they are being influenced (unduly?) by REH's suicide. And it seems to me that there is a somewhat snarky tone perceptible. So - wish me luck, but I'm not sure I will have the persistence to stick with the book right to its end. valeriaspirit
