Now that's a tavern! I've always been amazed by his detail.

Yeah, they really excelled at those kind of sprawling images, didn't they?

There's so much going in this single image. Buscema and Chan produce more in a two page spread than most modern comic-book artists achieve in an entire issue. You could just look at the characters in the tavern for ages and your mind creates different narratives for each one. Unlike modern comics that you skim through and finish within 5 minutes. That's why for me, Buscema was the best. Buscema made it look easy, he was the greatest at telling a story with pictures.

I totally agree, this was the highwater mark of b&w illustration for conan in comics form imo.

Buscema was great at these 2 page recaps of Conan's past, or as it turns out to be in this comic, what he's gonna achieve in the future. Conan and Robert E. Howard. Great stuff.

Love that you linked Roquefort Raider's Annotated SSoC thread on the Classic Comics Forum. I was a long time moderator there (now retired from moderating, but still an active member there). It's great place to talk classic comics, and that SSOC thread is one of my favorites there. Lots of good insight and analysis, and a lot of fun.

Art by Frank Brunner SSOC 30 One of my wishes has been for Brunner's Scarlet Citadel to get a classically recolored version, like in the Treasury Editions to go along with the other two King Conan tales (yeah, the last parts of Conan the Conqueror need it too). I'm afraid if it were done today, they'd overdo the browns and the blues like some of the ones in the recent Savage Swords.

Yeah, I think Brunner's Scarlet Citadel really deserved a good old Marvel Treasury Edition. I'm not to sure about the 'Hour of the Dragon' adaptation - I always found it difficult trying to read a Conan comic pencilled by Gil Kane.

I have never really enjoyed Gil Kane art on Conan. I have tried to in the past but just quit trying. Not my type of art.

I like everything Ernie Chan draws but Conan himself. He is too muscular and stiff in my opinion. Have never dig it. Other than that, Ernie is a very fine artist. Those panels posted here in the forum show.
