One of my favorite Conan art books I have is the Gary Gianni book collecting some of the stuff that appeared in the Del Rey editions... another great source for amazing Conan art is Conan the Phenomenon published by Dark Horse... I also have a soft spot for some of the original Weird Tales covers by Margaret Brundage.... a very different take on Conan, especially in the post-Frazetta expectatins of most modern Conan fans, but fascinating stuff nonetheless. -M

With the recent news that Grindberg will be drawing a NEW project of Conan for Dark Horse with classic writer Roy Thomas, it brought to mind a page of Tom's art I saw a while back & didn't remember what it was from. For good reason ... or bad, actually. I asked Tom about it on his Facebook page (LOTS of great Grindberg art there!) & he said it was from a story they pitched, but the editor of the time never green-lit it, & so was never finished. But he's also said he still has writer Roy Thomas' plot for that story, so if their new CONAN project for Dark Horse does well, maybe it could still yet happen! www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=382831

Alcala began -- but never completed for no stated reason I can find -- the art for a Conan-ized adaption of REH's Cormac FitzGeoffrey tale "Hawks of Outremer". Eventually a version with a different artist was published in SSOC #222. No slight to Malcolm Davis who drew that, but I really wish Alfredo's had seen print instead!

Hello Salant.
Looks very interesting, can't wait to see Roy and Tom Grindberg on Conan.

Thanks for Alcala art. Have you come across any other pages for this issue?

I really wish I had. The person who posted this 1 on comicartfans only bought the 1. And all Google searches I've made come up nada. Here's hoping someone here knows someone who might know someone who bought any or all of the other pages.

I always liked Pablo Marcos. Especially his pin-up work in SSOC.
Thank for the link.

Hey, thanks. This is a small gold mine of Bronze Age Marvel comic art that I've never seen before. Dozens of mini-posters of classic characters in wide-screen action illustrations. All of it is fun to see, and some of it is fine work. Check out the image of Conan in the clutches of a flying demon (clearly inspired by Marvel's Conan the Barbarian #42) by Bob Budiansky and Dan Adkins. And note the cover that shows up several times-- because in one case it's been altered to give Conan and his female companion more clothing. Delightful stuff for an old Marvel fan, and I had no idea it existed.

Your welcome. I thought those rarities from Marvel UK might've been of interest.
Here's art by Yannis Rubus Roumboulias with colorist Billy Macdog. Makes me wish they'd drawn Dark Horse's QUEEN OF THE BLACK COAST adaption ... with a different writer! More at billymd.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=%2F&q=conan
