Thanks, Scott! I've always liked Wenzel's work. You can tell he's going for a BWS vibe with that one. He is one of a very small group that has done art for both REH and Tolkien comics projects. BTW, since you're such a sleuth... Kerry Gammill did an illo for an SSoC ad in the early '80s. I remember that Conan had a sword and axe. Also, that Conan was hairy-chested (ie, true to REH). It was a well-done piece. Anybody got a scan?

Does this Kerry Gammill illo from SSOC #41 look like what you're after?

Some of the covers to the Avengers and the Savage Sword of Conan UK editions, 1975 -1976. I'm not familiar with these - what's the story behind them? Are they separate stories, or did they actually insert Conan into an Avengers plot? Judging from the cover captions, it appears to be a little of both.

The initial Savage Sword of Conan comics by Marvel UK reprinted the Conan the Barbarian color comics, in black and white. They were reprinting the early Barry Smith stuff. Unfortunately, the series only lasted for 18 issues. So, Marvel UK decided to merge the Conan series with the Avengers weekly comic. This was from issue 95-148, ending in 1976. They were all reprints, sorry, no team-up between Conan and the Avengers either. Marvel UK also had the habit of chopping up a single issue of CTB and reprinting them over 2 or 3 UK issues. Sometimes new splash pages were added for new episodes. The first issue 95, 12 July 1975 Here's the announcement for the new merger after the The Avengers and the Savage Sword of Conan. The second volume of SSOC was released in November 1977, and they actually reprinted SSOC comics. That lasted till 1985 for a total of 93 issues, that's kinda impressive. Here's a link with some of the covers starlogged.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/1975-76-avengers-and-savage-sword-of.htmlSome more info on Conan and Marvel UK's bronze age titles www.wymann.info/comics/005-MarvelUK2.html

Wow, I never knew these existed before. Most of those covers look so cramped and crowded with both titles and multiple images jammed in there. Thanks for all the detailed info, guys. I wonder, are these reprints worth anything now? They were all reprints, sorry, no team-up between Conan and the Avengers either. That's quite alright! I was kind of hoping that wasn't the case.

Yeah, we'll always have the fight between Conan and Captain America in What If 43.

Cool! I always loved the 'What If' series, especially the ones with Conan. They were fun because they were merely far-fetched speculations of what might happen, whereas an actual meeting of Conan and some modern-day superhero in the on-going continuity would likely be kind of lame.

A bit bigger ... ...... from SSoC 41 (Marvel Comics) • Art by Kerry GammillMy thanks to you and Scott both! I have fond memories of this pic. It's a pity Gammill wasn't tagged to be a Conan regular. He showed with this and his Power Man/Iron Fist run that he had the goods. The thing about this pic, beyond technique, is how solid it is from an REH standpoint. The hairy chest, the face, the sword looks good and the axe could've almost been wielded by Turlogh. Conan isn't weighted down by 20 spare weapons and he's "rangy but massive". Solid as the day is long, by Crom.
