I recently picked up and read Gail Simone's "re-imagining" of Red Sonja, QUEEN OF PLAGUES. I am sorry to say, I thought it sucked camel balls. The author clearly expects us to feel sorry for Sonja and her old female friend/enemy from her pit fighter days, but neither come across as sympathetic or likeable, IMO. I honestly felt more for the king's abused and neglected son, who is portrayed as an outright villain.

Ugh. I have tried many times over the years to get into Dynamite's various Red Sonja series, but I always give up after a few issues.
The only worthwhile thing from them that I've read The Ballad of the Red Goddess. Excellent stuff.

Simone's version is pure shit.

I preferred Simone's reworking of Sonja's "Origin" to the old Roy Thomas take on it.
The rest wasn't great.
I don't know if it's Simone's fault or Dynamite's, but it's seems like the setting wasn't the Hyborian Age.

They can be a bit TOO fantastical. Almost more like Lord of the Rings in some ways.

I have not read The Ballad of the Red Goddess, I guess you can't go wrong with Roy Thomas and Esteban Maroto. The Dynamite stuff, the thing I really find disappointing is that most writers have a minimal understanding of REH's Hyborian Age or at worst don't care. Admittedly, some of the covers look great.

I recommend checking out Red Sonja Scorched Earth vol 1 for Dynamite stuff. Mark Russell does a nice job with an entertaining story arc and I like Mirko Colak's art. It's not necessarily great, but pretty good; entertaining. I enjoyed it. I picked it up because I wanted to avoid anything too woke, like the Gail Simone stuff.

I've enjoyed the first three issues of the Invincible Red Sonja run. Violence, sexiness, sone pretty good art and writing.

First reviews are very positive. Less action-more story and character development. Cant wait to check it out. This cover by Jay Anacleto is gorgeous, his style reminds me on Polish master Rosinski, Thorgal's creator.

I am looking forward to see what Jim Zub is going to make with Sonja. His one shot RS and the Cub was excellent , but his crossover with Gail on Conan and Sonja was disaster-a total mess and parody of both characters.
