Greetings & Hullo! New to the forum, and an irregular visitor of the currently defunct Conan forum! While awaiting its return, I have a question which I've been wanting to ask for quite some time: Which movies, past or present, are in best in keeping the spirit and tone of Howard's various tales? (Just to make it interesting, no mention of any of the Conan films, Arnold's included.) I would like to use such a list to build a film library, so I'm not picky as to how old (or how new) the suggestions are, they can be movies from the 30s all the way up until yesterday! Thanks!

Hey Howardrencarn8! Sorry I haven't gotten to your post earlier. IMO, there are plenty of movies that fit your specs. Two very Howardian movies that I don't always see mentioned are El Cid and The Wind and the Lion (written and directed by Milius).

Wow, not only is 'The Wind & The Lion' one of my very favorite movies of all time, I JUST looked at it over the weekend! Synchronicity! (I also like El Cid, and 'Kingdom of Heaven', another very Howardian movie!

A great movie, from a novel that inspired REH to write Hawks of the Hills and it's Sean's birthday!

Today is the anniversary of the shootout at the OK Corral. I'm positive Howard would've loved Tombstone.

Finally had a chance to watch this. It was quite a trip. The first half moves very slowly but it pays off big later on. I was sorta impressed by how it reminded me of some of Howard's weird mystery stuff. I dont want to give anything away but I think its probably a cant miss for fans of Howard type media. I found it to be very pulp like in almost every respect. Although I believe the director wrote the script, it could have just as easily been taken from a story in Weird Tales or one of many other pulp publications. I liked it a lot. and the Bone tomahawks were awesomely cool.

"Taras Bulba" (1962) with Yul Brynner strikes me as very Howardian. I'd say it's pretty much the same mixture of, on one side, romanticizing barbarians, and on the other, showing some genuine toughness and incompatibility with civilization. If you like classical Hollywood movies, and also like REH, this is a film I'd recommend.
Then -- and I mentioned this in another thread earlier, so am just repeating this here for the record -- a recent TV series "Britannia", which is very Howardian in its portrayal of Romans vs. Celts. But, aside from being very Howardian, it isn't really very good (looks cheap; dialogues are badly written, etc.).

Morning, Gents. I was watching the absolutely superb 10'000BC from Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, 2012 etc) and in the Making Of documentary Emmerich specifically mentions he was inspired by pseudo-archeologist Graham Hancock,. but also Robert Howard himself. The film suggests that the dictator at the heart of the story is from a lost race of people who existed on an island in the atlantic, and that in the year of 10'000BC not only is The Sphynx of Egypt fully complete with the head of a feline, but the Great Pyramid of Giza is also under construction. Great film...

Centurion is one of my favorite movies. I have it on DVD and watch it fairly regularly. Director Neil Marshall is my first choice for a Bran Mak Morn movie; keep it low budget with a minimum of CGI, lots of bloodshed and a dark/gritty look. Just like this movie!

I always thought ULYSSES with Kirk Douglas in the title role was as Howardian in spirit as much as it was Homeric. Especially the final scene when Ulysses kills all the arrogant suitors. One, the only one who greeted Ulysses in his disguise as a beggar with restraint and courtesy, gets a warning from Ulysses to leave before it's too late, and he rejects it as an impertinence. Then, with the banquet hall littered with corpses and Ulysses' hand at his throat, he chokes out a plea for mercy, but Ulysses is having none of it. "It's too late. I gave you your chance. I never make a man a present of his life a second time!" The various monsters like Polyphemus the Cyclops are pretty well done for the special effects of the time, too.

The Last Warrior
Last time I posted on this movie, it got moved to the Russian film thread, but I feel like The Last Warrior is "a cut above" the other Russian fantasy movies I have seen, and deserves a little more attention. IMO, it's a solid "Sword & Sorcery", Fantasy, Action movie.
