Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) This was maybe the third or fourth place I've heard that movie recommended, and I think the second time I've heard it Howardian circles. So I went out and purchased it the other day. Still waiting for a chance to watch it!

I always thought ULYSSES with Kirk Douglas in the title role was as Howardian in spirit as much as it was Homeric. Especially the final scene when Ulysses kills all the arrogant suitors. One, the only one who greeted Ulysses in his disguise as a beggar with restraint and courtesy, gets a warning from Ulysses to leave before it's too late, and he rejects it as an impertinence. Then, with the banquet hall littered with corpses and Ulysses' hand at his throat, he chokes out a plea for mercy, but Ulysses is having none of it. "It's too late. I gave you your chance. I never make a man a present of his life a second time!" The various monsters like Polyphemus the Cyclops are pretty well done for the special effects of the time, too. I loved this movie when I was a kid! I'll have to see if I can find it somewhere. The Vikings is another Howardian Kirk Douglas movie. This is my favorite scene:

Another childhood favorite, 'The Warlord' from 1965. I loved the gritty realism of this movie. Not strictly Howardian because it takes a little while to get going, but good characters and great action:

Pathfinder 2007
For some reason I ignored/dismissed this movie when it came out, I had the impression it was more of a historical movie? I happened to catch it on TV a couple years ago, and now it's one of my favorites. IMO, Pathfinder is essentially an "80's Sword & Sorcery/Fantasy movie" with a budget. Lots of bloody action, some "mysticism" (magic), and some cool (visually) set pieces. This is same director who did Conan 2011, however I feel that Pathfinder has a more "Howardian vibe".

A little bit about Tatsuya Nakadai and the making of my favorite Samurai movie of all time.

They never seem to put this on TV, however, I managed to find the full movie on Youtube. Ulysses with Kirk Douglas

Apostle 2018 (Netflix)
The time period, mix of action, violence, cosmic horror and occult, reminded me of Skull Face. IMO Apostle starts off really strong but kinda loses focus in the 3rd act, but still an entertaining movie.

"A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within." -Will Durant
Just watched this film which opens with the quote above. It, of course, made me think of Howard. The film is based entirely on that quote, and although it is about the Mayans, it could have been the Picts or even our modern day civilization. A powerful, violent movie. Watch it for free (with commercials) on Tubi: tubitv.com/movies/543161/apocalyptotubitv.com/movies/543161/apocalypto

In Like Flynn (2018) Semifictional? adventure story of Errol Flynn prior to him becoming a Hollywood actor.
Very "Pulpy", almost has a "serial feel" to it, basically one action set piece to the next (Jungle Adventure, Opium dens, Femme Fatale's, Shootouts, Bare-knuckle boxing, etc.). And it's a very light movie, it looks good, the actors are good, but the "tone" is more made for TV than Hollywood blockbuster and/or reminds me of the late 90's TV action shows (Hercules, Xena, Relic Hunter, Mutant X, etc). Rated R, but IMO could easily have been PG-13 or even an 80's PG....... Just a fun, escapism movie.

A few years ago when I was reviewing pepla, I lamented the poor quality disc releases. Now, Gold Ninja Video is doing something about it:

Mandy 2018, I'm on the fence about this one, don't know if it's exactly howardian but it is strongly influenced by the 70's-80's fantasy boom that was born from REH's work. Definitely one of the strangest movies I've ever seen.

The Cursed (2022) starring Boyd Holbrook and Kelly Reilly, IMO has a "Solomon Kane vibe". Werewolf/Werewolf Hunter story, Gothic and very atmospheric. It's a little slow and probably one of those movies you either really like or don't like at all.....

This is probably low-hanging fruit, but there's always The 13th Warrior (1999), based loosely on the legend of Beowulf by way of Michael Crichton's book Eaters of the Dead...
Here's a teaser for the movie we never got:
I recommended this on another thread, but the Australian mini-series Shaka Zulu (1986) includes many Howardian elements, in my opinion:
And, if you liked Apocalypto (2006), which I just happened to re-watch tonight, then you may be interested in some of the older films that I think inspired it:
Kings of the Sun (1963), starring Yul Brynner in one of his finest and most physical roles, about strife in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. Unfortunately, all of the leads except Brynner are sorely miscast, but there are still epic battles, Mayan civilization, and real stunts and locations to marvel at.
- The Naked Prey (1965), directed by and starring Cornel Wilde, who is relentlessly pursued through the South African bush by a group of warriors.
- Faraon (1966), a Polish epic historical fiction movie that happens to be one the best-researched and historically accurate films about ancient Egypt, from which Apocalypto's eclipse scene clearly borrowed ideas.
- Predator (1987), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is not a '60s film but clearly inspired imagery in Apocalypto like blood dripping from the leaves, the jump off a waterfall, the protagonist being completely covered in mud, scenes of desperate running through the jungle, etc...

I think I mentioned Kings of the Sun in another thread, it’s so something Howard would’ve done, especially since it might take place in Texas.

I think I mentioned Kings of the Sun in another thread, it’s so something Howard would’ve done, especially since it might take place in Texas. Agreed!
Personally, I'm a big fan of Kings of the Sun, along with Yul Brynner's Taras Bulba (1962), even though nearly everyone else is miscast. Yul Brynner was very charismatic in those roles. Kind of the opposite situation to a film like Kingdom of Heaven (2005), also mentioned earlier in this thread, where everyone except the lead actor is perfectly cast. If only they had used Liam Neeson as the lead in that one...
A couple more Howardian movie recommendations...
La Guerre du feu or The Quest for Fire (1981), a French movie that's probably the most "serious" attempt at portraying a primitive world with Neanderthal protagonists...
Hrafninn flýgur or When the Raven Flies (1984), a "genuine" badass Icelandic Viking version of Yojimbo or Fistful of Dollars...
The Viking Sagas (1995), starring Ralf Moeller and Sven-Ole Thorsen in one of the most realistic English-speaking attempts at recreating Icelandic sagas, including filming on location, hiring local actors, using the right kind of horses, and writing a script inspired by Njáls saga...
