I got a chance to tell in at a 2002 signing that I thought his inspiration was all over the Sam Raimi film and he was like "Do you think so? Thank you very much!" Very nice guy and a wonderful artist.

It was a great time for comics, but being just a small kid I only caught the tail end of that fantastic era with titles like Savage Tales, Swamp Thing, Epic Illustrated, the various DC and Marvel offerings and of course Savage Sword of Conan. Thankfully, back issues were easily available for many years afterwards, and I still have many of the titles.

Thanos first appeared on Iron Man #55, one of two IM issues Starlin worked on. Another integral figure in Starlin’s cosmic saga, Moondragon, debuted one issue earlier in IM #54, but that’s not Starlin’s other issue (IM #56). When she finally got her origin story, it appeared in Steve Gerber’s Daredevil run in a four page insert written and drawn by...Jim Starlin. Cosmic confusion!

I liked Starlin's 70s stuff rather more than the work he did after his Marvel return in the late 80s. Infinity Gauntlet always felt to me like a bloated retread of the Soul Gems story Starlin did with Captain Marvel vs. Thanos. And of course his Warlock run was fantastic.

Thanos was inspired by Jack Kirby's Darkseid, I believe.

Thanos was inspired by Jack Kirby's Darkseid, I believe. Yes, although they diverge in their personalities. Thanos uses the Infinity Gauntlet to kill half of everything; Darkseid wants the Anti-Life Equation to enslave everything.

Bob Larkin was a mainstay cover artist for Marvel in the Bronze Age. You can check out his website here: boblarkin.blogspot.com/The star Wars Empire Strikes Back Marvel comic brings back many memories. I was big fan of The Defenders ( the original non team ).
