Thing is once Hawkeye is done by the end of the year, Marvel doesn't have anything on deck until Ms. Marvel over the summer. Boba Fett will kind of tide things over for a bit on the new show front, but it's looking like it won't be until summer that they'll start living up to the promise of what was announced originally (part of it was totally out of their hands).

Yeah, STFU with the political BS. Some of us read REH and this forum because we want to get away from this crap for a few hours. 24 hours a day everybody is trying to pushing their political agendas, even in an REH forum.
Conan ist not woke, nor is he an anti-vaxxer or anything else that you crazy people read into him.
He's a fictional barbarian who hates civilization and who likes whoring, drinking and killing bad people.
Just leave him like he is. People who enjoy Conan are not STUPID and know he's not a role model for modern times, jeez.
I'd argue Conan likes civilization, not that he'd admit it. The civilised lands offer more entertainment than grim Cimmeria. I too could do without all the intrusive real world politics. Again, I call for the creation of a dedicated thread for that sort of discussion. For sure there are aspects of civilization that Conan enjoys or likes, but there are also aspects that I think he despises. He doesn't like all of it. And I agree that there should be a thread for politics where everyone can just cut each others throats'.

The success of Shang Chi and Eternals in my mind shows that diversity is a good thing for movies Eternals is a little bit of an open question right now, we'll have to see how it holds up this weekend. But it seems to be more a case of a movie trying to do too much in too little time than anything else. Looks like they made the right call with Foundation on TV rather than trying to cram it into one film of whatever length. I came up with a line Ryan over at Screen Rant didn't use in his Pitch Meeting for the movie: Producer: So you made a movie out of Eternals and a TV show for Inhumans, shouldn't it have bee the other way around? Writer: .....Whoops! Producer: Whoopsie! But Shang Chi certainly did well, so well it proved Scarlett Johannson's point with her lawsuit that they settled it almost immediately after the box office receipts came in (though as I mentioned above and related to the joke, I think BW would've been a better limited series). I heard that they both underperformed a bit. Considering their budgets and the Rats greedy expectations, I don't they've done that well.

Movies that used to make a billion, the studios are thrilled at $350-$400 million. A Dune box office where it's at currently ($367 million) would've been considered almost as bad as the Lynch version, but today got the sequel greenlit in a few days. I'm guessing Marvel is discounting Eternals compared to Shang Chi due to no China. But I wouldn't be surprised if they take another route to tie up the loose ends from this picture, be it in another film or TV series, rather than a direct sequel.

Is the box office land scape different? Theaters are open. I don't think "Dune" was ever going to rack in remotely close to a billion. On the other hand with Marvels' new releases maybe people are finally tired of their shit.

On the other hand with Marvels' new releases maybe people are finally tired of their shit. Very. There's still a lot of trepidation out there. Typical weekend receipts are maybe 60% of what they used to be and that's a good weekend. Some weekends it's like the 90s when $35 million for #1 is a great showing. James Bond had a $55 million opening weekend, that would've been considered a major disappointment, now they're thrilled. Shang Chi did $75 million, which probably would've been the lower rung of a solid opening for a relatively unknown character, but now is a huge success. It's hard to tell for Dune since there was the free option (I took it...twice), but as I said the numbers must've been good enough that they calculated a decent percentage of the home audience would've gone to the theater so they took that into account when greenlighting the sequel. It's made about twice its production budget, figure the home audience accounts for the marketing budget (plus that's different these days as well with internet promotion cheaper per viewer than television), it did ok. Plus with the rise of the streaming option, the release windows have shrunk considerably so movies don't rack up as much as they used to. Plus paying $20-$30 to watch the movie at home either the same time as they're in the theater or very soon after is there (not even considering the WB and Paramount situations). I can't even say Spider Man will be a test case to see how close we are to getting back towards where we were because were hearing the concerns again. I'd like to think Dr. Strange will be the real mark of how far back we've come, but we'll see.

Bond's already come on our Sky Premiere Store to rent channel for £15.99/$21.35 Same here on Amazon. Its 45 day window closed over the weekend but it was on Prime Cinema long before that. The question for that one is where does it show up after the paid run is over, Prime due to the MGM sale or still one of the old outlets? (Showtime and Epix were where the Daniel Craig Bonds showed up previously but that was probably due to the Sony connection).

Review in progress for Eternals. Watched the first hour on Disney+ last night...they start off the movie with a scroll. OK, I know of a few films that made some money at the box office that did that. Only in those cases, it was "We're going to drop you into a battle in about 30 seconds, here's why it's happening in three sentences..." The scroll at the beginning of Eternals describes, well, half of the history of the universe and a whole bunch of complex concepts that could really use some screen time. People busted Andrew Stanton's chops for having an intro segment in John Carter to set up all the Mars stuff. But he remembered a key concept for movies, in the words of the late great Neil Peart, show don't tell.
And just from the first hour...too...many...characters. It's also an issue when the 2nd most appealing character (Gemma Chan's Sersi is the main focus and wisely so) is the incidental human tossed into the plot to set him up for a future role in the MCU (thank casting for that, they know something). And Chloe...you get to have a fight between Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayak...and it's the most clinical, CGI infused thing where the word "cat" added to fight is nowhere appropriate.
Will probably watch the rest over the next two days.

Not to branch too far off topic, but I thought I read somewhere that Peart had an almost Rainman-style autism that allowed him superpowers with the drums. Also, I had forgotten how much Rush's lead singer looks like Odo from DS9.

2nd hour of Eternals is a bit more focused than the first, but there's still too many characters. They made a big deal about casting a deaf actress for Makkarri. Well it's a good thing they're doing the Echo show on Disney+, that character's going to be forgotten before anyone knew her.
For those that haven't seen it yet (aka most of you), there's a twist where one of the characters turns against his fellow Eternals. Rang false with me. Not like the original comic version of the character was extremely well sketched out, but still.
It seems Chloe Zhou was looking to make a superhero version of 2001. Didn't quite stick the landing. On the other hand, it has its issues but it's nowhere unwatchable like Ang Lee's Hulk.
Will try to finish it up tonight.
