Well, the first Bond movie premiered 54 years ago today, so it seemed a good time to start this thread. We'll talk about Fleming and the stories/novels as well, of course. Fleming's Bond was a fair bit darker than the image one often gets from the films. That said, here's a chronological list of all the Bond films: evert.meulie.net/various/all-james-bond-movies/...and here's the opening scene of Dr. No:

One of my guilty pleasures is collecting various Bond covers. Penguin put out a nifty set of retro trade paperbacks a few years back and I really like them.

Loved that set, but couldn't justify the cost. Part of me wants a matched set, but there is also something fun about my mis-matched covers. (I used to have a photo somewhere but I cant find it now, of course.)

Ace film/book reviewer, Ryan Harvey, has ranked ALL the films based on Phil Noble Jr's idea for 5 "tiers" with 5 movies in each. Here is his ranking of the 25 Bond movies, with the films listed alphabetically within each tier. 1–5 The Essentials From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, The Spy Who Loved Me, Thunderball 6–10 The Classics Casino Royale '06, Dr. No, For Your Eyes Only, The Living Daylights, Skyfall 11–14 The Staples Live and Let Die, Moonraker, Octopussy, Tomorrow Never Dies, You Only Live Twice 15–18 The Outliers Diamonds Are Forever, Die Another Day, Licence to Kill, Spectre, The World Is Not Enough 19–25 Nap Time GoldenEye, The Man with the Golden Gun, Never Say Never Again, Quantum of Solace, A View to a Kill

There's an interesting interview/conversation between Ian Flemming and Raymond Chandler on line. The audio version is more complete as the transcript misses out a few bits (at least the one I read did).

Why is Bond always referred to as a "spy" when he never seems to do any spying? Spies gather intelligence and Bond seems to do just about anything but that.

Anyway I've largely liked the craig films (then again they were my generation). Spectre sadly was a misfire. I liked Blofeld's plan and liked that they reintroduce Spectre but at the same time they crammed in too much and had the absurd "bond and blofeld were raised together" subplot. Honestly I would have had it that in the aftermath of Quantum of Solace Blofeld took over Quantum and reorganized it into Spectre; Blofeld would taunt Bond about this; all the misery Spectre has inflicted, all the lives destroyed are in part Bond's fault. The last Craig movie would cover Bond and Blofeld's final fight and would end with Bond and Madeline finally finding happiness and Blofeld rotting in jail and facing trials for crimes against humanity.

I just got done watching Spectre (thank you Amazon Prime)...can I say I liked it better than Skyfall? At the same time, I agree there is a glaring problem which you've nailed exactly: it's missing a movie. There should have been a movie in between Skyfall and Spectre (Smiler? Snowblind?) where Blofeld and Spectre were reintroduced. Regarding the two growing up together, from the way it had been described, I thought we were going to get a non-comedic version of the Goldmember revelation with Thomas Bond being Franz's father. I'm actually OK with the way it was done, but it was done too quickly. Hannes Oberhauser needed to have been built up for everything to have more resonance. The way the film ends is a perfect way for Craig's Bond to ride off into the sunset, but it feels incomplete. I do wonder if legal concerns had to do with it, maybe they made a deal with the McClory people to do just one Spectre/Blofeld film.
