This popped up in my feed today from a Facebook site on East Slavic witchcraft and culture.
"Characterists – Legends of Magical Cossacks
Those familiar with Ukrainian culture probably heard about Zaporizzhian Sech and Zaporizzhian Cossacks – an independent military organization that throughout history is believed to follow their own interests, as well as the ones of Ukrainian people. Cossack warriors were very skilled with swords, guns, and mace. They are often portrayed bearing minimal armor, yet their success was legendary. “A Zaporizzhian Cossack can even trick the Devil himself” – people said about them.
Among Cossack elite were so-called Characterists (Kharakterniki – «характерники»)...."

A painting by Sergey Vasilyevich Ivanov depicting Eastern Slavs at some point during the medieval period. I've seen various translations/versions of the title. I think "Life of the Eastern Slavs" is probably the least clunky.
