Lord Grandrith himself! I have to go back and look it up, I think he was supposed to do the TV show but stuck in the movies and they got Ron Ely. What Tarzan movie is that from?, the action scene actually looks pretty elaborate for a 60's/70? movie. They did an odd thing in the video, they stuck in his one big action scene from the Green Berets with the Tarzan clip. I believe that was from Tarzan and the Jungle Boy, I don't see Jan Murray anywhere so it's not Great River and it's not Mexico so it's not Valley of Gold.

Heads up, the first part of the Tarzan of the Movies will be showing up Father's Day weekend (June 16-18). As usual, meant to do a quick episode and it got away from me. first part will handle 1918-1942. I suspect it'll be at least three parts. Will post the link here when it's ready.
Foundation rundown has been going on at Valleys of Numenor as well, but I haven't been keeping up with the link posting. Will play catch up around then.

Wait, now where was I? Oh yes.
Tarzan and the Amazons (1945) - Jane is returning to the jungle, but Tarzan is busy sneaking off to a secret city inhabited entirely by women. The role of Jane is now played by Brenda Joyce who is . . . okay, but she's no Maureen O'Sullivan. Once again there's some evil outsiders who want to loot the lost city of its treasures. Speaking of lost cities, Palyria is yet another lost civilization in walking distance of the Treehouse and as I often have to wonder with these isolated all-female civilizations, where do the little Amazons come from? Universal fans will note that the Amazon Queen is played by Maria Ouspenskaya. It's okay, but the series isn't breaking any new ground.
Next time: Tarzan vs. Acquanetta

Tarzan and the Leopard Woman (1946) - Tarzan suspects that a series of "leopard attacks" in the area are actually the work of a cult of leopard men (hey, that would make a great title for a Tarzan novel . . .). And of course, he's right. The cult is led by Acquanetta, during her brief attempt at mid-'40s stardom. Fortunately, her role is limited enough that her wooden acting doesn't bring the movie down like it sometimes did over at Universal. They spout the kind of anti-colonialist, anti-Western rhetoric which would get them plum positions in modern academia and plan to kill some local, Western educated girls they've abducted as part of their campaign of terror. Thankfully, this sort of thing doesn't happen in real life, right? Meanwhile, Tarzan and Jane take in a young boy named Kimba, who is actually Acquanetta's nephew, sent to kill Jane and cut out her heart. Holy crap, this took a dark turn. It all builds to a thrilling climax where Tarzan pulls a Samson and brings the roof of the temple down.
I am forced to ask again: what part of Africa is this? We have "natives" who aren't Sub-Saharan and British authorities and I give up already. Any resemblance to any continent real or imagined is purely coincidental. Despite some silliness, this is a pretty solid late entry in the series. Certainly more solid than the next one I'm reviewing.
Next time: Johnny Weissmuller's Mexican Vacation

Next time: Johnny Weissmuller's Mexican Vacation Part 2 of the podcast comes out in a couple weeks, I rank this one the best of the RKO Johnnys. I remember the climax from when I was a kid and they use the outfits from the Burroughs book though nothing of the plot. You’re not going to leave out Tarzan and the Huntress, are you? Not that’s anything different from two or three other of these pictures.

I'm skipping Tarzan and the Huntress simply because I haven't seen it yet, which seems like a good reason. Not that not seeing movies normally prevents people from reviewing them online . . .

You’ve practically quoted my disclaimer in the next episode! I’ve never seen a Lex Barker Tarzan film, so I try to keep things just to the plot and who’s in it.

Tarzan and his internet babe Tarzan finds a computer someone threw out of a plane. Tarzan is really smart so when Boy showed him how to get online he learned super fast. Tarzan liked internet porn cause the women wore no clothes like him and Boy. Jane got jealous and ordered some sexy outfits from Amazon. NOw Tarzan looks at her a lot more. She also had breast implants. Anyhow Tarzan has been working out and is looking for a new movie to star in. He also wants to go to some reality world that is on the web. He also wants to meet Scarlet Johansen. Tarzan is a cool dude.

Tarzan and the Mermaids (1948) - Weissmuller's long reign as Lord of the Jungle finally comes to an end. A girl from the city of Aquatania (Linda Christian) needs Tarzan's help. Along the way Tarzan runs into his Mexican friend who just happens to be here in Africa. Soon they find themselves in the lost city of Aquatania, a place which, despite the Meso-American architecture on display, is, the movie assures us, still in Africa. I mean, we must still be in Africa, because the Aquatanians are all Caucasian. High priest (because there's always a high priest in things like this) George Zucco is of course an antagonist and everything goes pretty much the way you'd expect after a decade and a half of these movies.
Weissmuller loved being in Mexico and ended up buying a hotel there, which means at least one good thing came out of this movie. Pretending that Mexico, complete with obvious Aztec ruins is Africa is about as convincing as it sounds. It's a surprisingly dull affair, with endless swimming, dancing, singing and rote plotting, with only the Mexican locations, Zucco's hammy villainy and a brief bit where Tarzan impersonates the city's idol as the only high spots. There's no Boy here, though Johnny Sheffield wouldn't get away from the jungle that easily, spending much of the next decade toiling in the vineyards of Monogram's Bomba the Jungle Boy series, making 12 films. Weissmuller wouldn't escape the shadow of Tarzan either. Pretty soon he'd be playing Jungle Jim in 16 movies for Sam Katzman over at Columbia.
You can leave the jungle, but the jungle never leaves you.
Next time: Tarzan the Greatest

Lesser had a heart attack, there were deaths on set and Johnny got an immediate sunburn that needed make up practically the whole film. I do remember the bit of Tarzan as the idol winking at everyone. Is it just here in NY but were the Lex Barker Tarzan’s barely ever shown? As I mentioned in the podcast they had one run in the 80s on WNEW (don’t remember them on WCBS), once during the AMC Tarzan marathon and a run on TMC Saturday Morning Matinee.

Funny you mention the winking bit, the part where Tarzan is dressed as the idol is all I remember from watching that one decades ago, something where Jane is asking if they could be freed and Tarzan as the idol is nodding an affirmative. I forgot the title, but the above posts filled that part in. As for Caucasians in Africa, why not, the continent has been home to many races from the earliest times.
