I gave up on the Dark Horse Conan mid way thru "Queen of the Black Coast". Man, that was disappointing. Larry, I have been filling the gaps of my Marvel collection. It's funny... around '95, Marvel just stopped getting what made Conan work. Dark Horse seemed to lose its way with "Queen". It looks like they are trying to fix it with the current series but, for me at least, it's too little too late. that's the weird thing. WRITING WISE they pulled their head out of their ass quickly; Avenger was nearly up there with Timothy Truman and Kurt Busiek writing wise; Van Lente GETS Conan as a character and he managed to make Janissa the Widowmaker (previously mocked as derivative) into a FAR more likable character. Barring a few missteps he was actually damn good. If the art had been better I have no doubt Avenger would have done well.

I wouldn't mind if Van Lente came back for another series honestly

I seem to recall some truly hideous '90s-style comic art and not much substance. I cal this the "I Am Cable!" Conan cover. The way had been lost. LOL, he looks like Rob Liefeld's PROPHET character from Extreme Studios. I guess Prophet may have been inspired by Conan's look, but jeez, this is just a scary ass image on so many levels.

I think what both the 90s and today have shown is that trying to make Conan part of an overly stylized modern art type just doesn't work. If you want to do a one off project, have at it. But an ongoing series needs something...well, normal for lack of a better word.

Is it not possible to read Howard and not portray Conan correctly. That says much about what we are seeing today in Conan comics.

Conan does need a certain art style; Giorello and Nord captured the style. Davilla's.....doing an admirable job. Ching was lousy for the most part, which is surprising since his star wars work actually looks pretty normal and good. Why the hell he felt the need to make Conan a stick figure is ANYONE'S guess.

I was looking thru some early issues of Marvel's mid-90s fan mag and I came across some interesting Conan info. There are solicitations for cancelled issues of "Conan" and "Conan the Savage", as well as an article about upcoming (in 1996) Conan stories. Here are the solicits: Conan #11 - In this special all-inebriated issue, Conan gets plowed on mead, bumps into some armor-clad vixens, trips over a sickly midget, and fights one heck of a hangover! Pull up a barstool for "Crom, Am I Drunk." by Larry Hama and Pino Rinaldo.Obviously this one is a mis-solicit of the actual issue which is a continuation of the previous issue. Conan #12 - By Crom, Conan's going to kick some serious booty in this issue! by various.I think they didn't know what was going to go into this one - probably because it was going to be cancelled. Conan the Savage #11 - Concluding John Buscema's final Conan story! Plus Pat Mills whips up a time travel tale in which Conan must avenge not only the murder of a fair maiden - but his own!The Buscema part is wrong, since that story was all in #10. Here is the cover for that issue: Conan the Savage #12 - Brutes, babes and battle-axes- What Cimmerian could ask for anything more? - by variousHere is the cover: The article about upcoming project is four pages long - if I can get a good scan, I'll try to post it. The high points of what was coming up include the return of Red Sonja, Conan vs a Hyborian Age version of Venom, Conan vs a Hyborian Punisher, Conan fighting Thor (again), and a Simon Bisley drawn version of "Rogues in the House" called "I, Thak" as told from the perspective of the ape. What an odd time for Conan that was. Thanks for all this great info! It's bittersweet to see what might have been, but never saw the light of day. But it's cool to know, at least.
That Simon Bisley drawn "I, Thak" tale would've been a "must have"! Was there any art from it in the 4 page article?

I've come across readable scans of the 4 page article. Does anyone want them posted?
Also CONAN THE SAVAGE #11 was to include art by Doug Wheatley & John Floyd, who previously drew CONAN #6 of the Larry Hama written 10 issue series.

I asked inker John Floyd if he remembered anything about CONAN THE SAVAGE #11 & even though it was during Marvel's bankruptcy bad times he was kind enough reply.
John Floyd: "Of course it's no prob, Scott. I'm on FB to talk comics. You just told me about the Conan comic job I never knew I had! Not too surprising though as I had been told by Conan editor Mike Lackey I could ink Conan anytime I wanted and I was being one of his 'go to guys' on Conan at the time (like I should be at Dark Horse right now). I was waiting for an assignment from him when Marvel went bankrupt at the start of '96 right when I just moved to NJ planning to work for them & all Conan books got cancelled. I guess he never got to tell me about it. I remember calling Marvel asking what was going to happen to Conan and being told they had no idea. My editor, Mike, was gone."
Also, here's 2 of the 4 pages of the Conan comics article from MARVEL VISION fan magazine #3.

And here's the final 2 pages of 4 of the Conan comics article from MARVEL VISION fan magazine #3. Some interesting info: artist Tom Grindberg was slated to draw more Conan, if sadly a Spider-Man spin-off Hyborian Age Venom, writer Dan Abnett was going to bring back the Blade Brothers, & Chuck Dixon would've written a new adventure bringing Thor & Conan together again but in continuity not as a WHAT IF as before.

GAH! Conan's wearing one of those superhero face-thingies that isn't a mask or helmet. Is there a name for those? Has anyone outside of comic books ever worn such a thing? It's called an happuri...
