Has anybody seen The Revenant, with Leonardo deCaprio? Fighting bears bare-handed, crawling through the snow on your elbows after being mauled to within a quarter-inch of your life ... what it must have been like to be a Cimmerian...

Fighting bears bare-handed and winning, no less. 8) It was a pretty darn good movie, but I did get a little antsy around the last twenty minutes or so. That could have been because I had been in a theater for roughly 5 hours by that point.

This is one I've been wanting to see, but haven't been able to get to the theater. I love the visuals in the trailer, something tells me I might have to wear a heavy coat to see it. Looks cold.

I've got to get to the theater and see The Revenant! I watched Bone Tomahawk the other day, good western with a horror/weird west element which I think most Howard fans would like.

An excellent movie! See it in the movie theater and enjoy the way that the human drama is set against a majestic, sweeping landscape.

I enjoyed Bone Tomahawk for most of it, but the final act fell more than a bit flat for me, what with most of the action happening f@^&*** offscreen. That and the painfully amateur look of the film killed it a bit.

Bone Tomahawk was alright. It didn't totally blow me away and I probably won't watch it again, but it's worth a RedBox rental. There was some great acting in this, and the cannibals were quite gruesome.

Historically inaccurate, but so what. The savagery level was off the chart.
It had a subtly creepy Aguirre: Wrath of God/ Apocalypse Now quality to it I enjoyed as well.

I saw 'He Never Died' yesterday and it was gruesome and funny. Someone recommended it on the old board and if you like your gore splattered with humor you'll enjoy this movie. I can't say much without giving anything away, but Henry Rollins is great as Jack the main character.

A couple of films we saw recently were The Martian which looked great (as you'd expect from Ridley Scott) but was just okay
I really liked The Martian and thought it lived up to its expectations. My favorite movie from last year is Mad Max, but The Martian isn't far behind. Last night my wife and I saw The Intern, starring De Niro and Anne Hathaway, and we were pleasantly surprised. It's not a sci-fi/adventure/action movie like the ones listed here, but I'd recommend it for a change of pace.

I've watched a few things this weekend:
Son of Frankenstein: One of Universal's most underrated films, I feel, with great performances from Rathbone and Lugosi.
Conan the Barbarian (1982): Easily one of my favorite movies of all time. Sorry.
Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance- This was... interesting, to say the least. It's poorly made and the story is nigh impossible to follow, but I couldn't look away. I suppose it helps that I'm a fan of the first movie, but that was bad in a different way.
The Silence of the Lambs: It's become popular on he internet to slate this one off in favor of Manhunter, but I still feel this holds up as the best Lecter film, equaled only by the TV show.

Saw The Revenant recently - a bit ponderous at times, maybe half-an-hour too long and a bit heavy-handed with its use of symbolism, but overall a thrilling picture with some great set pieces, most notably the opening battle and the bear attack. Also watched Sicario - it was much leaner than The Revenant, but the world it presented was just as dangerous, just as mean. It reminded me of a Michael Mann film. The ending drifted a bit in comparison to what had gone before, but that’s a minor quibble. ...... I agree about The Revenant. I need to see Sicario.

I enjoyed Sicario a lot as well. I definitely didn't call some of the things that happened near the end.
