The mandalorians in the old EU were....interesting. They were basically the pillaging warriors who went around conquering and killing (this meant they frequently worked with the sith). They eventually devolved into two factions. The Death Watch were the guys who like the whole "rape pillage murder burn" aspect.

It's mind blowing to me that a thing so beloved as Star Wars with hordes of frothing-at-the-mouth fans has been completely and utterly screwed up to monolithic proportions. It's good to see a few comments out there saying how these new movies don't have to really exist- that ultimately the fans decide what is cannon an not and these pieces of garbage can just be forgotten.
This ranks up there with Game of Thrones. There is an argument that GOT was on track to be the greatest show of all time when considering the first few seasons. Then beyond all reason took an unprecedented nose dive to mind-numbing depths, ruining the entire thing forever.
It's crazy to me. How? How do you screw this up? It's like they were trying to screw it up.

In my opinion, they pushed agenda over story. And I think there were competing agendas. First and foremost was money. They saw a fanbase thirsty for more and just assumed they'd slurp up anything starwarsy so they pushed things through with the recklessness of any corporate stooge. "I don't care what you do with it, just slap Star Wars Disney on it and fast!" That, I think, was the main agenda. It's why Force Awakens was so cookie cutter. It felt like Star Wars enough. But there was no story. It was all set up. That's the easiest part. Look like Star Wars and pack it full of questions that'll have us hanging on for more. The more nefarious agenda is the political/ideological angle. While the first movie sacrificed story for cash, the second (now that they had everyone) sacrificed story to an ideology. Now that they had the market, they no could attempt to make Star Wars in their own image, and that image didn't mesh with Star Wars of yore. Kill the past was the theme, and by killing the past, they killed Star Wars. -All the Man of Action swashbucklery? Scolded and slapped by a princess turned school marm. -The heroic man selflessly sacrificing himself for his friends? Prevented and scolded (even if kissed) by a meaningless character. (That kind of self sacrifice is reserved for Purple Haired Substitute Commanders Who Keep Secrets from Men.) -The legendary hero with the faithful, ever hopeful, determination (the kind that saw the good in and saved the most evil villain of the galaxy)? Withers and hides because his nephew might be mean. Also gets his ass kicked by a girl. There's more, but that's enough to highlight what the ideology did to gut the soul out of Star Wars. It really is sad. Here's a sad story. Whenever it came out, my kids and I nabbed opening night tickets to The Last Jedi, bubbling with excitement. The kids brought along their lightsabers, my son dressed up in last years halloween costume. All of our conversations centered around all the little mysteries sprinkled throughout The Force Awakens. But at the end of the movie, I was heartbroken and a bit angry from all of the above and more, and I was trying and failing to force myself to think well of it. I was curious how my kids (all under 14 at the time) would react to it. After all, this is the new generation of fans that Disney desires to indoctrinate entertain. Before I could ask them what they thought, walking out of the theatre, they were talking about the movie amongst themselves, about this scene or that. They spoke about Luke contemplating killing his nephew and the rest of his storyline, and my eldest daughter, without thinking much said: "I hate Luke Skywalker now!" That's the reaction, not of some fat neckbeard with every unopened Star Wars toy raging at some childhood trasher, some Nazi toxic fan that the director would like to envision as the only critic of his 'masterpiece', but of a child who could care less about fandom or agendas either way or anything else. Just a kid who likes Star Wars. Or used to. She hates Luke Skywalker now. Since that night the excitement for anything Star Wars has taken a serious nose dive in my house. The kids are interested in it just as they would with any other movie franchise with explosions. There's nothing special about it anymore. No edge of the seat questions about what'll happen next. For The Last Jedi the kids practically counted down the days til the release. For The Rise of Skywalker, the release came and went without a word. The thrill is gone (again, not just for me...but for my kids! That, in my eyes, is the real tragedy.) I'm trying to imagine me as an 11 year old kid, not being excited about a new Star Wars movie. Well done, Disney. We will watch The Rise of Skywalker at some point. I'm trying to avoid spoilers and there is some interest left in me. It's funny that after The Last Jedi came out with stellar critical reviews and praise and adoration, and that now ROS is not getting the same critics excited, I kind of have a little hope that it'll be better than TLJ, so there's still a spark deep inside me. But for the most part, the thrill is gone. Gone in me. Gone in my kids. I feel sad writing that.

I will watch the Rise of Skywalker at some point, just not going to fork out the dough for it at the cinemas.
I enjoyed parts of the Last Jedi more than the Force Awakens, and I found Rey, Finn and Poe to be likeable and interesting characters.
Sometimes movies are a reflection of our time, the social politics of the day always creeping in, especially if major studios are still making a ton of money out of films that have these agendas in them. Kathleen Kennedy did up the ante on the gender politics by a few more notches, there was plenty of SJW stuff in The Last Jedi, the amusing interaction between Poe and purple haired Holdo, notice how Poe was represented as an ‘aggressive and unreasonable’ male challenging the authority of Leah and Holdo. Yeah, there was no room for the male swashbuckling of the 80’s movies, a lightsaber wielding Luke dispatching the forces of evil and a Han Solo taking down Stormtroopers with his blaster would be too much ‘reckless toxic masculinity’ for this new Star Wars outing.
As funny as all this political nonsense is, it is kinda disappointing as a grew up watching cool heroes like Indiania Jones.

I got to see Rogue One on TV a couple of nights back and I kinda liked it. I liked the connection to the 1st movie and the characters were likeable enough.
I have not seen the Force Awakens, the Last Jedi or Rise of Skywalker. The Star Wars saga just don't really interest me that much anymore. If I stumble across one of the movies on TV and it captures my attention I'll watch it and may get surprised like I did with Rogue One. When I stumbled across The Force Awakens this time last year on TV, I found it difficult to watch, probably not in the right mood at the time.

I actually looked forward to going out to the movies to watch the Star Wars prequels years ago, man, times sure have changed.

I haven't been able to muster any enthusiasm for Star Wars any more. I went to The Force Awakens and was awestruck just how bad it was. Not even Harrison Ford could save it. I've seen the rest on TV and that's the best place for it now. They watch like terrible made-for-TV films that ape better films. Let's face it. Star Wars is a thing of the past and should stay there. Anything they do now can only make it worse.

The Mandalorian finale was pretty damn good. This really felt like Star Wars. I haven't seen Rise of Skywalker, and from everything I'm hearing about it, I'm not missing much. I only watched The Last Jedi once in theaters due to how bad it was and I'm not in a big hurry to run back and see the conclusion.
What the fuck were they thinking with this new trilogy. Not having Han, Luke, and Leia together was such a wasted opportunity.
From here on out, they need to keep Star Wars grounded into a more s&s feel rather than epic fantasy and the Mandalorian should be a good example.

Unfortunately Hollywood ALWAYS goes for the epic fantasy feel where the whole world is at stake and there are half a dozen main characters and a dozen supporting characters all having storylines that have to be "resolved" in the end.

Saw Rise of Skywalker this afternoon. It was a hot mess. The first half was almost unbearable, all the hasty damage control really killed it. After that it settled down and was okay. I give it a solid "meh".
Tha Mandalorian finale was killer.

I give it a solid "meh". Tha Mandalorian finale was killer. Sounds like some of the reviews I have been reading on it about it being an overly long meandering mess. Kathleen Kennedy is gone and so is much of the identity politics of The Last Jedi, but the closing chapter is full of subplots with too much skipping from one scene to another, also too much reediting and reshooting. I will see the movie, but I am not overly optimistic given the direction they have taken the saga.

There are cool parts, I didn't hate it. It was just very....lax.

There are cool parts, I didn't hate it. That may be the saddest review I've ever seen.
