Yeah, I procured all of my Conan graphic novels in one lot, except for Rogue and Isles, for about $30. But this was nearly 10 years ago. Got Isles a few years ago. I am now trying to finish my Savage Sword before the Netflix show comes out. It is the only thing left of Conan in comic form I have left to get, except for Savage Tales 1 and couple others as well as some variants. I have a really big chunk of Savage Sword. If the show is successful (and it will be — I pray!), the prices are more than likely to explode.

I unfortunately only started collecting the comics about 3 to 4 years ago so I'm a bit behind. I have the majority of the Dark horse stuff and almost all of the original colored comics series from Marvel but I don't really have a huge amount of Savage sword. Most of what I have are the Conan Saga reprints.

Not to completely derail the thread, but, I've always wondered about the Sagas. Are they strictly reprints, or is there new material as well? I thought I read somewhere they have new articles and other tidbits. Just like Dark Horse's Robert E. Howard's Savage Sword: is it just reprints or is there all-new material?

Mostly reprints of CtB and SSoC, but there's some original content, including some excellent articles detailing the comic book chronologies of Conan, Kull, and Sonja. marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Conan_Comics_Chronology
Some new covers too, including some very nice BWS art for the first handful of issues. Here's a not-very-complete checklist that calls out some of the original content. Don't remember where I got it or who made it. mega.nz/file/WKgjGAjQ#Ty6us7ONilJ_nZ-cn0qDY1X_eAW-7oF3NIvFKaDfKAc

If you can, try to get the first 9 issues. They were original Barry Windsor Smith covers. Every other cover was reprinted and slightly re-colored or mirrored. There are some original articles and portfolios. Mostly the same stories from Savage sword and Savage tales, and a few from Conan the Barbarian with special Margin notes made by Barry Windsor Smith while he was penciling those issues. They're cheaper to track down than the original stories, so they're a great alternative, although there are only 97 issues.

As I've mentioned before in a previous thread, I only started collecting the Original series at the beginning of this year and I'm making my way through reading the original Roy Thomas run for the first time ever. (I know.. I'm really late). I'm currently at issue 87 but I'd much prefer to read my books online although I have hard copies lying around so I can preserve the quality. I currently own Issues 12 to 22 and then issues 41 all the way to 275. I'm currently trying to fill in the gaps in my collection and just a few minutes ago I won an auction for issue 24 (The first full Red Sonja appearance). My thoughts on the book is that it is absolutely phenomenal so far but there are two things I noticed. Just after Barry left, there seemed to be a barrage of people, quite the majority, that seemed to hate Ernie Chan inking John Buscema's work. I find this weird because personally, Ernie seems to be the best inker Conan had ever had and he's definitely one of the best artist's to ever draw Conan. Any idea why people hated him at first? Also, there seems to be a lot of fill in issues because John Buscema's schedule kept getting crowded with several other titles. Like... a lot of filler issues and reprints which is understandable but I still don't understand why they wouldn't keep John off SSOC till he finished Tarzan or something and have him focus on the main title but to be honest, I'm glad they didn't. that is pretty sweet... I just obtained the final issues of an 80s gaming magazine I was to busy/could not afford/not in shop the right times to collect back in the day
also recently found my box of SSoC books... probably 100 or so of them

Sorry if this is old hat, but I don't remember seeing it discussed anywhere. Great podcast that does a really deep dive into the Coming of Conan Epic Collection. I thoroughly enjoyed it and need to re-read the issues again now! epicmarvelpodcast.com/conan-1a/

Quick question about Conan 21 from 1970-something... On the cover of #21, there is a blurb that says "Winner of the comic book industry's own Academy Award for best comic-mag!" What award is this in reference to?

I'll stick this here, latest episode of the podcast dealing with the first Marvel run Thanks Johnny, already looking forward to listening! I’ll put the next episode over in the Dark Horse folder even though it also touches on Marvel II. I kind of gave up on the series about halfway through so I’m not going to do a lot of detail, just kind of hit the high (and low) points. I really think they wanted the license more for the reprints than to actually do anything with him. Which is fine, we got some great volumes in that era thanks to Cory (again!)

Very enjoyable Johnny, just the kind of content I'm looking for. I also re-listened to your Chronology episodes recently as well. I'm currently working my way through the original marvel years CTB, interspersed with SSOC issues as they fit in to the timeline. I'd like to use the map I ordered as well but it still hasn't arrived You've probably read them, but just in case - the Barbarian Life books by Roy Thomas are great for accompanying the CTB run. I'm off on holiday next week so will get through at least a few more issues backed up with Roy's notes. The Dark Horse run - I'm halfway through now, and I just finished the Horror Beneath The Stones Epic Collection. They're without doubt the worst Conan comics I've ever read. Dark Horse started pretty strongly with Busiek IMO, and the Nord art is some of the best I've ever seen. Love it. Truman was decent as well, and this epic collection started with Thomas (not his best, but not terrible either) but the Wood/Cloonan stuff is awful. I'd read it was polarising but I went in with an open mind (and secretly hoped to like it) but it's shocking. The art makes Conan look skinny and weak. I don't mind a slimmer, pantherish Conan at all (like BWS's), but not one with the lower legs of a gazelle. And some of the writing... 'Conan desperately needed her love and assurances...' or whatever it was - are we still reading about the same barbarian? Such tripe. I really want to finish the Dark Horse stuff, but if it's more of the same then I think I'll just skip it. Just ordered the TBP of the new Titan work, looking forward to it based on the mostly favourable stuff I've read on this forum!

Once you finish the Wood/Cloonan run (which I think is the lowest point off the Dark Horse run), Fred Van Lente's writing is actually pretty good imo. The art is still kinda iffy in Conan the Avenger. By the time you get to Conan the slayer, both the art and writing gets back on track. It's a shame they couldn't finish that run.
