I also have Means to Freedom and have found them to be fascinating volumes. I am glad Hippocampus Press is bringing them back into print as they are cornerstone works for any REH aficionado.

Joe Thoms Yeah, these 2 volumes are truly fascinating. Good to hear that Hippocampus Press is reprinting them - hopefully at a reasonable price.

In Internet Speculative Fiction Database notes that Avon never provided cover credits. They list the cover artist for #8 as unknown and simply credit #10 to L.S. which is the artist signature on the cover, but whose initials those are is not given. Not that that helps much, but the ISFDB is one of the best resources I know for finding such info.

I tried to read the stories but the text is too small. Oh well, I guess I can still look at the artwork on the covers!

I used to post on the old board as rees123 in 'Show us your Howards!' as my main interest is in the books and stories rather than in the many other facets of Howard fandom. I have been lurking here for a while and decided it was time to make a contribution. My Howard collecting has been on the slow side recently but I have come up with a few items that may be of interest to you all. While I was putting this post together I became aware that while my old Photobucket account was still active it is no longer free to share photos so I have played around with a few other free hosting sites, so we'll see how it goes. With that in mind it would seem that even if the old site is resurrected in some shape or form my posts would be useless as there will not be any images accompanying them. If anyone would be interested in seeing anything else from my collection, just ask and I will re-post them. My first recent find is one that I have been chasing for a few years and then three come up on eBay in the space of a few months. With the first, I was outbid in the last few seconds, with the second, the seller decided he wouldn't post it to Australia but I managed to snag the third. Probably the worst condition of the three but sometimes you have to take what you can get. So here is the T.V. Boardman edition of Conan the Conqueror in original dustjacket (front and rear) [img src=" i.postimg.cc/WhS1CJZb/Boardman-Back-Orig.jpg" alt="" src="" style="max-width:100%;"] I have however sourced a facsimile DJ I also acquired two of the famous 'Not At Night' series. The first ' Terror by Night' featuring the story "Rogues in the House", the first hardcover appearance of a Conan story And 'Keep On The Light' featuring "Worms Of The Earth" Both of these were without dust-jackets but I have sourced facsimiles (obviously). Now I just have to find 'Grim Death' featuring 'The Black Stone', but I have been lucky to get the August Derleth anthology 'Sleep No More' which also contains that story. I haven't ordered the facsimile DJ for that yet but will post a photo when I do. Many here will be familiar with the Foundation's 'Fists of Iron' series but I thought I'd post a picture of mine as I bought it from Leo Grin of 'The Cimmerian' fame. And a picture of part of the Howard bookcase (mainly hardcovers; all the chapbooks, magazines, etc. live in their own boxes). That's all for now but as I say, if anyone is interested in seeing more, either from Howard, Tolkien or some 1st editions of the earlier fantasy authors, please let me know.

Hello and welcome back Halla. Great to see you have some of the early hardbacks from the UK - I have not come across the UK editions, yet. I love the selection of books that you have in your bookcase. I've picked up loads over the years and sold or lost them eventually, a little bit like my Comic-book collection. What books do you have on the top left hand side of the photo? I'm not familiar with the first book (...ter of the Dark) and I cannot make out the slim volumes in between that book and the Skull-Face Omnibus. Thanks Hun.

Thanks for the welcome. Writer of the dark is a large softcover limited edition (500 copies) from Dark Carneval Press in Switzerland. My copy is number 296 and is in a plain buff cover. According to Howardworks - "As of early 2000 there were 500 sets of pages, with 200 bound in a reddish orange paper with a rat design, and 120 more in an undecorated tan paper ("after he lost the first cover design"). Another "80 were lost in a flood," with 100 more as yet unbound, but intended to appear as hardcovers." So, supposed to be 500 copies but more like 320 in circulation. Am I looking for the 'Rat' cover design to add to the collection? That would be completely insane - so of course I am.
The other slim volumes next to it are The Robert E. Howard Companion #1 - from Joe Marek, with contributions from the likes of Fred Blosser, Rusty Burke and Steve Tompkins. Then there's A Short Biography of Robert E. Howard by Rusty Burke and then The Fantastic Worlds of Robert E. Howard from James Van Hise.
My hardcover collection is close to complete but I still have a long way to go as far as magazines, fanzines and chapbooks go - but I'm getting there; slowly.

Halla - what a wonderful collection! What series is in the lower-right on the shelf? Thanks for your post. I may make a similar effort although my collection doesn't compare to this.

Hi Chris, If you mean these - they are the incomplete Conan series from Donald M. Grant. Released as deluxe limited editions (though the 'limitation' was up to 3000 copies in most cases) they were printed on heavy high quality paper and illustrated in both colour and B&W by some of the leading fantasy artists of the day. They were released in uniform grey dust-jackets, but as you can see they are very partial to sun fading on the spines. I sometimes think about replacing the worst of the dis-coloured ones but my collecting passions range far and wide these days so that remains close to the bottom of my 'books I need desperately' list. They have received some unnecessarily harsh criticisms on various blogs and forums in recent years due to some problems with editing and typos but at the time they were published they were by far the best available. They were available in a tray-cased edition but these seem to be very rare. I have only seen a few copies come up for sale on eBay over the years and they are always far too costly for me when you consider that the only difference is the tray-case. Hope the information has been helpful and let me know if you would like to see pics of individual volumes or some of the artwork.

I found a complete set like yours (all VG-F) for about a half-grand. Nice set!

My first thought was 'that's too much to pay' but a quick look on eBay and Abebooks has caused me to think again. Although you can get the individual volumes more cheaply, postage costs and the time and trouble to get them from individual sellers might make it worth the price. Especially if they really are VG/F. But I did find a Wandering Star/ Book Palace complete set of 3 volumes of The Complete Conan of Cimmeria for just over $500 on Abebooks so that might be a better buy considering all the work that went into the editing and book design. And if you look around I'm sure you could get them separately for even less. I'm not knocking the Grant books but then I'm something of a completest (okay, that's probably an understatement). Cheers.
