I am one of the legion of writers who can proudly proclaim: “I stole from H. Rider Haggard!”

H. Rider Haggard with his daughter, Lilias Rider Haggard. She went on to write The Cloak That I Left, a biography of her father.

They haven't shown it in years, it's just like King Solomon's Mines" Finally somebody showed it and he realized why: "Jeez, this movie IS King Solomon's Mines! Half the picture is stock footage!" James Clavell had a little better luck with his novels and that movie about some guys breaking out of a German prison camp.

Visual Haggard is an excellent resource for HRH-related illustrations and also contains a lot of bibliographic info: www.visualhaggard.org/

Worst coverdesign/layout, ever! The graphic designer should be thrown in jail for ruining such a fantastic painting!

Egypt of ancient times has inspired many an author to write wonderful stories about that mysterious land. I drew this picture at a time [circa 1972] when I was reading the Allan Quatermain adventure books written by H. Rider Haggard, about that mysterious land of pharaohs. I had already read, "She," and "Ayesha, the Return of She," and was halfway through reading, "She and Allan".

New Puffin Classics edition coming in March 2018: Hopefully they get this into as many schools and libraries as possible. It's insane how well this novel has stood the test of time, on top of it being excellent on its own merit (which in itself is an understatement).
