I never could stand Hogan, until I saw some matches of his from Japan in which he had to actually wrestle. He was pretty good.

Yeah the one thing about Hogan was and still is there aren't a lot of people who don't care one way or the other. They are either like you were, where they can't stand him (negative but still a strong response) or they loved him (positive and a strong response). That's why he draws. That's why he is da man that built wrestling.

Hollywood Hogan was the best "heel" of all-time. People either loved him or hated him but no matter what they tuned in to watch him. Awwww the good ol' days... nWo 4 Life I don’t think Hollywood Hogan was the best heel of all-time, but playing that character certainly revitalized his career. Fans pelting him with trash when he turned was great TV. I think Ric Flair was probably the best heel of all time. Eric Bischoff does a podcast called ‘83 Weeks’ where he gives a lot of great behind the scenes information about WCW when he was in charge. Hogan, who was notoriously distrustful when it came to the business, loved working with Flair, and trusted him completely. He knew Flair would make him look like a million bucks, and would work his butt off to get Hogan over. Flair made a career out of being a heel. The heat he got from the crowd was an amazing love/hate relationship that lasted decades. I always had a soft spot for Big Van Vader as well. He was one of of the most intimidating big men ever to step into the ring. Every match he had looked like a shoot. His powerbomb was brutal.

I took a friend's little six year old boy...he had never watched wrestling. At the beginning of the first match the first guy that came out was dressed in a spider man outfit and absolutely blew the kids mind...his eyes got big as basketballs...now he is a fan for life no doubt...great fun

Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, etc. Other wrestlers tend to be big comics fans, too, like Prince Devitt (Finn Balor nowadays) coming out at Wrestle Kingdom with his body painted up like Carnage.

Old thread, but I thought I would log in a few comments.
IMO, wrestling has been on life-support for close to a decade, if not longer. They lost the core formula soon after they tried turning Steve Austin heel (bad guy) and went into the botched Invasion angle. Right at this time, Vince had as much mainstream exposure as could have been hoped for and they completely and utterly gave up the formula for...something else. They went into a horrible era of toilet-humor and sex-related angles. Everybody had a title (thus diminishing the titles) and they started working angles in which matches took place for all the wrong reasons. The idea that all these traveling tough guys were there first and foremost to win matches to climb the ladder to eventual title shots was lost. Instead, ever match had to have a contrived, unfulfilling story-line attached to it to justify it. Fast-forward to now and nobody cares who has the titles and nobody cares who wins and loses the matches. Now, the production, spectacle and celebrity is the focus, meant to be the main draw and it sucks. It's completely unallowable with no feeling of anything at stake, even in the pretend world of wrestling.
If you want to watch a quality product, check out pre-2000 WCW Monday Nitro- 3 hours in which they would just send the wrestlers down to the ring and you could follow them as they won and lost matches rising and falling in rank. Great variety with Cruiserweights, Japanese, Lucha, Heavyweights and all commercials were book-ended with the Nitro Girls. Heh, just sitting here, I realized they couldn't have anything like The Nitro Girls in today's political climate. Sad.
ECW on TNN was fun, for craziness.
And yeah, Hogan-era, Bret Hart's era and most of the Attitude era and a few years after had it's share of great content too.
But today's product is as dead as wrestling has ever been, no matter what WWE's stock says. Just check out how they have to tarp off half the arena for TV tapings. Wrestling is gone.

Wrestling is fantastic literally everywhere except WWE. Not to sound morbid but with WWE, everyone is basically just waiting for Vince McMahon to pass away in his office or something because he'll never retire and all the problems are rooted in his controlling mentality. They've got 30 writers on staff and all their ideas get thrown aside five minutes before showtime because Vince doesn't trust any of them and would rather run more fart jokes in front of 3,000 fans.
But AEW has just started and put on two excellent shows, New Japan is still cruising along putting on great wrestling and expanding overseas, MLW is a very good low-level promotion you can watch for free on Youtube, and that's not even getting into all the indie shows you can see just by googling wrestlers you're interested in.

Well, American wresling (WWE) is obviously show directed from the start. As ex wresler (free style) I watch this form of entertainment for fun in begining, later out of respect of this amazing atleets, and because I have learned much things that I used in sparing back in old days. Its just what it is - entertainment for masses and thats it. It has roots in old Olimpian games, no doubt in gladiator fights, but that could never hapend today, so ve get some form of "this as could've been" in pro wrestling. Nothing to understand specificly, you just love it or dont. If you are some ufc fighter or wrestler, I recomend you to watch John Cena, Batista, or (my favorite) HHH training videos and motivation speach. This guys earn all respect cause they are all great atleets, strong as bull, agile and well trained to perform great moves risking their body and health. Even if it isnt real fights, for all else they earn it. And yes, it has its moment of fun and laughter. If nothing, you'll fall in love with womens wrestling 😍 Explore actually Collegiate Wrestling is the real American wrestling....wwe is soap opera for men lol
