I ought to add that Steven King tends to be a little cynical about short stories. He's speaking from the perspective of the big name author who can routinely make mega-bucks from novel sales, compared with which his short stories earn him relatively much less.

With this news, are any of the writers out there inspired to take a crack at writing a REH pastiche? I imagine Cabinet already has specific writers in mind and may have approached them already concerning possible projects. But what about you guys/gals? Just for fun, I’ll plot out a tale and see where it goes. At the very least it will be a good writing exercise.

Hi, i enjoyed your ULLIRSBORG short tale. very entertaining norse tale with some great horror. Thanks very much for sharing. [ but the stupid site would not let me copy a few lines to quote in my little review ] ==== >>>> NEW SHORT story collections ==== i hope they do publish books of short stories then hopefully i can read some of your tales in them? Once the 1st new book of short conan tales is successful, then writers [pro +amateur] will be queuing up to submit their tales. Short story collections are very important because then pro and amateur writers are showcased on an equal footing. Most of the best ideas and faithful plots will come from amateurs /keen conan fans, who know the world and main characters far better than a 'hired mercenary pro'. Short story collections will allow the publisher to groom a stable of the best new conan writers and continue quality new tales for years into the future. [ and maybe, after a few years of short success, they might find longer tales good enough to be a short novel? i also like the idea of 3 [ 80 to 100 page] stories in one 300 page novel? all 3 tales could be by the same writer, if he /she can manage all that? ] [ but writing any long dragged out conan novels [ of 240pp or more] is like cutting the balls off a champion gladiator? ] >>>> SHORT STORY COLLECTIONS !!! >>>> remember the PHENOMENAL MEGA SUCCESS of the Ace book series of mostly short conan tales [ cleverly repackaged by decamp +carter]. that series brought REH conan [+ a few pastiche tales] leaping across the entire world of fantasy. [ and it was so popular it was reprinted many times in the 1970, 80 s +. and when decamp added some novels they were only short novels. easy to read and exciting action.] >>>> and the new tales of CTHULHU MYTHOS [lovecraftian horror] have been lots of books of new short tales [ which fans love ] they are a staggering endless popularity and horror publishers still love them. With horror, and swords & sorcery, SHORT STORIES RULE the world! ---

I used to write a lot of song lyrics back in the day, but short stories are a recent hobby for me.
The Fanfiction.com site is okay but it is rather clunky.
I "serialized" this one over in my Cosmic Awareness thread.

I have another one in the works, hopefully more after that.

[ sorry i missed your tale - i thought 'cosmic awareness' was for art? ] ==== i dearly hope THEY will publish short tales - like yours? you have good talent. looking forward to more. Best wishes.

I will probably do they next one in its own thread.
Thanks again!

Things have changed drastically over the last month or so concerning Conan; Robert E. Howard and his creations. It feels reminiscent to what happened when DeCamp got hold of Conan. In a few years, will we be in the same boat as the bad old days with the upcoming pastiche novels? Will fans of the future be able to discern between the original REH yarns and the pastiche writers? I dunno, but it seems pretty familiar!
I think it is fine expanding on the worlds created by REH with board games, video games or even with the comics, but when it comes to expanding the actual prose we are in very dangerous territory.

...I think it is fine expanding on the worlds created by REH with board games, video games or even with the comics, but when it comes to expanding the actual prose we are in very dangerous territory. fantasy fans of the future wont care about any specific writers from history: they will be too busy immersed [ wired up ] in fantasticly realistic virtual reality machines? they will be living the adventures for a while...until their money runs out [they will run up massive debts to play on], or til terror attacks f#k the electric, or til their mom pulls the plug, again...? very few young uns will read books - they will listen to audio or video books. funcom will part rule the entertainment world [ they know where the future big money earning lies ] and the spirit of reh will laugh at all the fools who tried to make money from his creations, and at those fans that tried to worship him... >>>> the owners [ cabinet-paradox, funcom, etc ] just want to sell more temporary licences to greedy publishers [ who will not have time to succeed much - a 5 year licence is far too short? ] >>>> THE BEST [ dream on.... when a new pastiche tale is great, superb, excellent - it stands up well with the best of reh tales. [ about 30% of all conan pastiches were any good, or decent. and only about 10% were great, very impressive top class tales. [ like EMERALD LOTUS by Hocking ] if we get a few great new short tales i will be pleased. and they will help promote reh creations into future years. ==== [meanwhile i am reading the best new short tales of Lovecraftian Mythos horrors... many great new tales have only vastly increased the popularity of HPLovecraft and his specialised horror genre. Rock on short Cthulhu horrors! ]

Rock on short Cthulhu horrors! ] Hello Bux. Maybe I'm being a little over-cautious cos' of all the recent developments in the REH world. Please forgive me for saying this but I have never played a Boardgame in my entire life and can understand that eventually an REH game will have to be expanded with new storylines, characters, settings etc to enrich the game playing experience - the same goes for videogames. The comics have adapted the Conan tales countless times, I have read and enjoyed them for decades now and it would be pointless for Marvel to pursue the same policy. They should have fun with the character and make the upcoming comics as exciting as possible - even if Conan spends some time in the current Marvel Universe! If certain issues/story arcs in the new series interest me I'll pick them up - I'm kinda content with the Conan comics I already have in my collection. I was initially excited by the announcement of new pastiche material, but, after a few swigs of fermented mare's milk a couple of nights ago (by Tengri it was strong stuff) I fell off my Hunnic Black Charger slap bang in the middle of Southwark Park in South London. My stoic Hunnic Black Charger stood guard all night. In the morning all the excitement about the pastiche stories was followed by a sobering hesitancy about the pastiche tales. To make matters worse, my Black Charger finished of all my Mare's milk Really, all I'm trying to say, maybe not so eloquently, is that with the recent news about the upcoming pastiche publications, we could end up in the next decade or so with the same problem we had back in the bad ol' days with a futuristic DeCamp-like author/cyborg re-writing the REH yarns and altering them beyond recognition. It has taken REH fans decades to finally have the REH yarns presented as Howard originally wrote them and it would be a shame to lose that. Thanks Bux. Hun.

Perhaps it's time to repost this here for reference and clarification:
As a side note, this was first published 20 years ago in The Fantastic Worlds of Robert E Howard 1997 I believe. I also recall Mark Finn mentioning on the old forum that he had no gripes with potential new pastiches providing:
1) Robert E Howards original Conan stories were available in print
2) pastiche was kept totally seperate from REH's original tales (ie no posthumous collaborations etc).
I've not yet seen Mark's updated New Manifesto.

I think as long as the pastiches are attributed correctly, labeled separately and not interfiled with the originals as happened with Lancer and Ace, I have no problem.

I think the situation is different than it was in the early 80’s when the Tor run began. The incredible amount of un-adulterated Howard material that has been made available in the last few years should make it very clear what is canon and what is not. As long as that distinction remains and credit is given to the source inspiration, I think the time is right for some Howard pastiche books. And I for one am ready!
