I think the situation is different than it was in the early 80’s when the Tor run began. The incredible amount of un-adulterated Howard material that has been made available in the last few years should make it very clear what is canon and what is not. As long as that distinction remains and credit is given to the source inspiration, I think the time is right for some Howard pastiche books. And I for one am ready! Certainly like to see a listing/advert for REH's Del Rey Conan books on the back covers. Terry

I would be happy to do a Conan short story, but I'm not sure I have a novel in me.

This would be bucket-list territory, for me. Either a novel featuring Conan or some minor character from the Hyborian Age explored, short stories . . . anything, really. I would just love an opportunity to play in the coolest sandbox, ever

I feel more comfortable just using the Hyborian Age setting, not any existing characters.
I started a Conan story once and never finished, it just felt awkward.
I do have an idea brewing that involves a cameo appearance by King Conan, we'll see if anything comes of it.

An anthology with a variety of writers doing short stories or novellas in appreciation of REH/Conan would be a great way to get it going.

I do have an idea brewing that involves a cameo appearance by King Conan, we'll see if anything comes of it. I’ve done one short story so far, and I was mostly happy with it. I had a writer friend look at it, and he pointed me in the right direction and gave me some awesome motivation! I think I’ll try to expand on the basic idea of my short, and see if I can build at least a short novel out of it.

Judging by the small amount of feedback we have on the forum here, there's quite a lot more interest in pastiche featuring REH's own characters than new ones set in the Hyborian age.
For my own part I wrote some 32000 words of yarns for the old message board, consisting of 4 Conan fanfics, 1 Steve Costigan and a small humorous western, plus a few poems. I tried the best I could in my own ramshackle way, but the Conan’s were still relatively light in tone compared with REH’s intensity and atmosphere.
Since then I filled out a nine phase overview of Conan’s life, including some proposed history for beyond Hour of the Dragon. The first phase is not intended to be an origin phase, it was just to provide some more backstory for Conan to reveal in a Queen of the Black Coast novel which I also sketched out (with some background for Belit), the main plot for which is novella length, and also contains several other short story length sub plots. A few of Belit’s backstory details were indirectly linked with my Yaralet fanfic.
Also have two more Conan short tales plotted, one with a young naïve Conan in Zamora, shortly after ToTE, and another set about six years later, some years after the Yaralet fragment.
Then there’s a rough plot for a Solomon Kane novel, which sprang from a whole mix of influences, incorporating some of Miguel Martin’s observations, plus a part reaction to the SK film, which I thought was great S+S, but went off the rails with regard to SK’s character.
Apart from that I have what I think are interesting notions for a Brek yarn and another three Steve Costigan’s, one is an epistolary which would require a fairly intensive re-read of REH’s letters to write properly.
I also had a Kirby O’Donnell short story idea which was going to feature a supernatural antagonist still around from the Hyborian Age, until I remembered that REH wrote Kirby for a whole different market and his yarns never had any direct manifestation of the supernatural in them.
I wrote all the above just for speculative fun, mostly out of naïve enthusiasm perhaps. I know none of us can truly know what REH would have actually done with his characters. And KEW’s words on the subject still ring true.
In addition to which none of us can truly capture any one of REH’s several styles. Being versatile REH could consciously change his style quite a bit, and what casual reader would generally be able to guess that he wrote both Conan and Steve Costigan for instance?

A Black Vulmea Pastiche or two would be welcome.

I wouldn't be THAT interested in new Hyborian Age pastiche myself. But, yeah, an anthology involving REH characters would be cool to read. These are pulp characters, keep the stories short. Hyborian Age pastiche in the wrong hands would just be beyond atrocious and my head hurts thinking about it. The recent (post Truman-Giorello) DH comics and the 2012 film have already caused a lot of damage to Conan as a property, lackluster Conan novels would be the final nail. If someone has a killer Conan novel in them, that's great, but if it gets published, it better be damn good.

Can you forward me it please? In short, no. Not to be impolite but that's a lot to ask for in one fell swoop. You've read my fanfics, at least, on the old forum, and I'm still grateful for the encouragement you sent me back then.
