The Whole Wide World is playing and after dinner I will raise a toast, probably Wild Turkey Rare Breed....and then The God in the Bowl, unless the Wild Turkey takes over first...

He was one of the greatest adventure writers ever. What more is there to say? He created a bunch of unforgettable characters, and even his lesser one-off stories leave the reader thinking, "That throwaway line or reference, and that one there, and that one there, could've made the basis for a whole story (or series) by itself." Just unbelievable. He should've lived longer, been able to travel widely, and had a more joyous life. He rated it. Like many many others, I drink to his shade.

I agree with all of that. Another thing I wish is that he could have met his fellow writers; I think he would have enjoyed that. Can you imagine Robert E. Howard, springing for Smith to travel and meet and then the two of them heading east to spend a month in Lovecraft County? Ah, the roars of laughter, poems read late in the night, Howard later reciting what a silly drunk HPL was. It would be awesome.

Happy Birthday REH!
114th I believe.
Tonight I'll read a little something, maybe write a little something, and certainly drink a little something in his honor.

I failed to grab a copy of anything REH this morning as I left in order to read him throughout the day, per my annual tradition on this day. I'll have to make up for it tonight when the kids go to bed. I'll toast and drink something in his honor at 9pm this evening.

Happy Birthday, REH! I think I'll listen to a short story on my afternoon walk...probably Cairn on the Headland as I need to give that some attention for the REH Story of the Month.
