As some of you might have heard, I'll be leading a crew of NPS archaeologists who will excavate a long lost storm cellar behind the REH House next month. The cellar was filled in by the Carter family in 1970. According to Floyd Carter who was a teenager at the time, the cellar was full of "junk" and they threw more in when they cleaned out the house -- including Isaac Howard's doctor's shingle. Since the house is on the National Register I was able to get funding from NPS to cover my salary and that of one of my colleagues. Project Pride will supply housing for us and some supplies. We'll be partnering with the local high school to have the kids come out and volunteer. So even if we don't find anything spectacular, it will be a great outreach event for the community. And hopefully it will generate a lot of publicity for Project Pride and the REH House.

Unless it's a vampire. Your colleagues' name isn't Steve Brill is it?

This is too cool. Even if nothing astounding is found, it will bring more attention to the Howard House, which is a good thing.

Hopefully, the long lost, and to date, unknown manuscript relating the adventures of Temüjin/Genghis Khan by Robert E. Howard will be found.
This is great news, thanks for the update Jeff.

Very cool. I donated. Wish I could participate!
(Kind of curious though, never given through gofundme, does anyone know if they reach out to you at some point for things like shirt sizes?)

GoFundMe is usually for charity. This is the first time I've seen rewards offered (like Kickstarter.) Jeff has handled Kickstarters before (Skelos Magazine) so I'm sure it's well in hand. I'm sure they'll query for the data they need once they're funded.

Hey guys, the Southeast Archaeology Foundation will send out emails for shirt sizes in a few weeks after we get back from the dig. They will also email a donation receipt so you can deduct it from your taxes. The report will be available later this year after all the artifacts are analyzed. SEAF is our friends group, but this is their first GoFundMe as well. I'm helping them out with it, but I'm learning as well as it is a little different than KS.

We want to thank profusely all of our donors so far! We reached 50% of our goal with the first 24 hours and now we are closing in on the last 25% of our goal. Please let everyone whom you think might be interested know about this project and this GoFundMe campaign. We need your help and support to make this happen! In the meantime , we want to tell you about one of the items that we think could be recovered from the storm cellar. In 2017, the annual gathering of Robert E. Howard fans, known as Howard Days, had a surprise visit from Floyd Carter, who was a teenager when his family bought the house in 1970. Floyd described the storm cellar that he and his brother filled in, and even drew a sketch map of its location behind the house. He also described the contents of the cellar -- mostly household items including glass containers and other objects. The Carter also cleaned out some of the items still inside the house and threw them in the cellar before filling it in. According to Floyd, one of these items was the sign (or shingle) of REH's father, Doctor Isaac Howard. This "doctor's shingle" appears in a photograph of a young Robert and reads "DOCTOR HOWARD RESIDENCE." Today there is a replica of the sign on the front of the house, but recovering the original would be a great discovery and and a wonderful artifact for the museum to display.

I just wanted to let everyone know that We have received some very generous donations from Fred Malmberg at Conan Properties and Derrick Hussey from Hippocampus Press to support this project.
We also received a generous private donation from a well-known fantasy author that wishes to remain anonymous.
I really hope this will bring a lot of attention to Howard and to Project Pride and Cross Plains. So far so good!

I created a Facebook page for the project so a have single place to share pics, videos, updates, etc. I will try to do some live video if I have enough bars. Cross Plains doesn't have great cell reception. www.facebook.com/REHarchaeology/
