Read some of these stories but need to get this collection. Anyone got recommendations for other "historic" S&S taking place in ancient Rome or around that period? Howard Andrew Jones "Desert of Souls" is gold standard of historic S&S to me, so anything like that in Rome (or elsewhere in ancient world?) would be great. Vettius and his Friends by David Drake. Also check out Bard by Keith Taylor.

Vettius and his Friends by David Drake. Also check out Bard by Keith Taylor. +3 for Bard, they are great books! That made me think of Robert Silverberg's book Roma Eterna, definitely not sword and sorcery, but a good collection of alternative history stories where Rome never fell.

Dog Brothers,
Many thanks!
I have "Vettius and his Friends" by David Drake and heartily recommend it.
Tritonian Ring by L. SPrague de Camp sounds up my alley; off to Half-Price Books!

You can try the Videssos Series by Harry Turtledove. One of Caesar's cohorts is transported to a world based on the Byzantine Empire of about the time Anna Comnenos. The series runs to 4 books starting with The Misplaced Legion.
