I suppose it's worth mentioning to anyone that wasn't there, but I set up a table to hand out free books for attendees - as well as the leftover copies of The Robert E. Howard Bar Guide from last year, there was the Robert E. Howard Sampler (edited by myself and Chris Gruber), An Index to One Who Walked Alone and Day of the Stranger, and Essays on Robert E. Howard & Others.

Yeah, between the Bar Guide, Sampler, Index to OWWA, and Essays, I gave out something like 400 books.

Thanks Deuce. I found the end of the report interesting... Except for me, none of the young or middle-aged men I saw at Robert E. Howard days looked fit. Many were fat. Nearly all were weak. There were many older fans there but I’m not commenting on them.
There was a panel there that discussed the various games (video games, board games, and D &D style games) based on Howard characters. One of the Howard scholars, who was a consultant for a popular game, said that he thought Howard would be a gamer if he were alive today.
I couldn’t disagree more.
Howard enjoyed doing physical things. He enjoyed boxing and wrestling with the guys. When he couldn’t do that is when he became depressed.
In hearing those comments and seeing those fans, it occurred to me that too many Howard fans were living vicariously through his characters rather than emulating them. Howard fans are reading his awesome stories then meeting their nerd buddies in a basement to play a Dungeons & Dragons style game about Conan the Cimmerian.
Howard would not have wanted this. He would have wanted you to read one of his boxing stories and start boxing as a result. He would’ve wanted you to read his westerns and take a horse out on some expedition. He would’ve wanted you to be inspired to push your own limits like his characters did.
That’s the inspiration we are meant to have when we read fictional men. We are meant to emulate them. Not fantasize about them or live vicariously through them.
Robert E. Howard characters are legendary. You too can become a legend. The fans who read the adventures of Howard’s characters and choose to be like them are the fans that honor Robert E. Howard, and themselves, the most.

I think Howard might get a kick out of an RPG now and then. (Imagine being in a D&D group with REH, HPL, & CAS!)
But yeah, he was pretty active and action oriented.

Who goes to Howard Days? I really need to go. I went 4 times between 2006 and 2013. Since then, some combo of business, finances and family has interfered. I'd really like to go back, just not sure when.

Who goes to Howard Days? I really need to go. I've been going the last few years. It's fun. Very relaxed.
