While Barry created awesome art for the early Conan comics, he did cool stuff before and after that. Looking at that art and BWS' life is what this thread is for. Here's a link to his official website: barrywindsor-smith.com/Self-portrait. Artist Richard Friend looks at the first BWS artbook, Opus.

He was heavily influenced by Jack Kirby...in fact, some of his Marvel work in the sixties looked very similar to Kirby's immortal pictures

I Have some of the daredevils that smith did for Marvel in the sixties...Smith has a very nice grasp of the Kirby technique...some of Smith's greatest work no doubt

Barry's Weapon X is considered another classic in the field.
As you likely know Jack Kirby's style was considered the Marvel house style and new artists were encouraged to emulate his dynamism and layouts. BWS had a more naturalistic Kirbyesque style early in his Marvel career than some of the later artist's I thought.

Kirby and Smith were.are both geniuses...Ditko was a genius too...amazing art. A lot of other good artists worked for Marvel back in the day...those three were the best. I always thought Don Heck drew the hottest girls though!!!! tip of the hat to Sterkano, Ayers, Colan, the Severins, Larry Leiber, and George Tuska also

When I grabbed this off a website (in a hurry), I misread it slightly. Barry's only Western comic art is within, though. Here's a link to the blog post I got the cover from: pencilink.blogspot.com/2008/08/western-gunfighters-4-barry-smith-art.htmlAnd here's one page of Barry's art from that issue:

As you likely know Jack Kirby's style was considered the Marvel house style and new artists were encouraged to emulate his dynamism and layouts. BWS had a more naturalistic Kirbyesque style early in his Marvel career than some of the later artist's I thought. The advantage that Smith had upon arriving at Marvel was that Kirby was already the main influence upon his drawing style, whereas someone like John Buscema was quite different. As mentioned on the Buscema thread, he was encouraged to take on board Kirby's way of storytelling, but he was never as much of a Kirby-clone as Smith was in his early work on Daredevil and Avengers. If you look at his early Conan stuff, you can see how some inkers like Sal Buscema would slightly dilute the Kirby look with a 'softer' inking style, whereas others like Frank Giacoia and Dan Adkins didn't. ...... Never knew that before. That makes sense in retrospect. Thanks for the xtra info Kail (O Ever Knowing Keeper of the Flame).
