the artist titled the pic i posted 'the watcher' [ no mention of mind flayers [mf] ] and his pic has about 8 tentacles, mf s have only 4. == Gygax created his superb race of illithids [ mf ] to promote his new rules about psionics [mind powers]. The mf s are a brilliant invention [ 1 of gygax best ] and are mega popular with rpg fans. no doubt he was part inspired by the cthulhu mythos creatures, and other inspirations. == [ i think HPL & REH would have adored the powerful mind flayer monsters ]  |

I've always been a fan of Flayers. I just don't think that book cover is the whole story. I would guess that Gygax was wary of copyright hassles. |

So, I think he was being evasive or he wasn't remembering correctly. If someone asked me to design a race of "humanoid cthulhus", they would be roughly like the Flayers. |
