I am reading Conan and the Amazon and got to say I am loving every sentence. Believe it or not this is my first Roberts. Why it took me so long I have no idea except after all the hype I guess I was afraid I would be let down. Roberts has a lot of the gift that Howard had, he is just an excellent storyteller and his characters are very vivid. I have just pushed him to the very pinnacle of Howard pastiche writers. I am also looking forward to the new one by Mr Hocking but I also have seven more Conans by Roberts to enjoy...awesome!!!!!

What happened to the rest of this thread? I have found the Conan Tor pastiche books really hard to find in the UK. Do you have the same problem the other side of the Atlantic? Just realized I've mixed this thread up with the Steve Perry one

well I enjoyed the Perry also but I could not stop turning the pages on Conan and the Amazon. Sometimes you can find good deals on EBAY I also find them fairly often in used books stores and Goodwill...both of which exist in HUGE numbers in the Nashville area...dont know if I can help you guys on the Islands though
Based on what I know now I would put Roberts first behind Howard when it comes to writing good old Conan

But, I have my reservations if she can make it across the Atlantic. It's an awful looong way!

Fan John Maddox Roberts myself. I’d recommend SPQR series, too. Good mysteries set in the Roman Empire. One thing that’s great is even though all use lots of same characters, you can pick up any title from series and read it independently. Personally I read the first one, and “nobody loves a centurion” which takes place during Caesar’s Gallic campaign (lots of good Celtic & Germanic culture sprinkled in). Recently finished “the princess & the pirates” which was fun, and featured metellus’ interactions w/ a young Cleopatra. All of them sprinkle in good culture & history; I feel like I learn more about Roman life than many actual histories I’ve read! Mick.

I’ve been consuming them via Audible-Amazon, which works quite well. Give us the setup for Conan & the Amazon!

Well a fairly mature Conan hooks up with a militant female ex queen and her dwarf bodyguard. They agree to take a job escorting some weirdos to a mythical city so deep in the desert that its essentially a legend. With a few other hardy warriors they make the troublesome trek and after various conflicts (including getting lost in a burning sandstorm.) Conan and his sunburned lady companion and their crew find the city much to their amazement. Although its obviously very old and haunted, the entire place looks pristine, like brand new. However, to touch any of the marvelous treasures means certain death. Unfortunately also for Conan a tribe of intolerant slave holders live far beneath the old city. Conan has to surrender to them and soon finds himself in the arena along with his lady pal. However, they are far from the only ones searching for the fabled city. Ok, I will leave you there, except to say the queen of the underground warriors is one nasty B---h. haha

Sounds interesting. I think I’ll track it down (after I run down Emerald Lotus). Also my addled brain read first sentence & thought you were describing Conan in a MMF threesome which seemed a bit “off brand” LOL.

read Perry's Conan the Defiant if you want him in a threesome for most of a novel...and one babe is a zombie no less!!

I can see lots and lots of influences in Conan and the Amazon...a little Leigh Brackett, some The Mole People...maybe even some Fritz Leiber...plenty of cool stuff happening that he puts together to make a very good tale...and it never gets boring
