Another article with some more perspective here: collider.com/red-sonja-movie-director-jill-soloway/That an arguably "d-list" character like Red Sonja can have a movie in production whilst an iconic character like Conan gets sidelined by Hollywood Studios perhaps shows more about Hollywood's current sensibilities and preoccupations than it does about Conan himself. Very interesting. Thanks for the link Von K. I'd say the guy was inaccurate with his assessment of Red Sonya in two ways though. Hard to know how to rate this but I'd tend to place her as a b-list character, at least as far as tv-tropes seems to callibrate such things. Also, as you already know, he misplaced her in the superhero genre when she's actually a S+S/fantasy genre character.

@ Lonewolf and Wulfhere.
I've no gripe against Hollywood promoting female leads and female directors btw, only their habit of sidelining certain IPs (like Conan) or overly retconning already established IPs to fit the latest PC trends instead of creating new stuff to embody those themes.
Regarding Jill Soloway as choice of director I don’t get the impression she would get too contemporary thematically with Red Sonja. Her reference to mythology seems to suggest she’d pitch it more at least partially in the myth genre which is compatible with Fantasy/S+S, and often combined with many other genres these days by screenwriters for it’s universal appeal to the human psyche. That’s partly why the superhero genre is so popular. Superheroes themselves for instance are partly based on the mythological heroes of old, some more directly and obviously like Thor for instance, and at least to some degree fill their old cultural role in a more modern context.
The general angle for Millenium back in 2017 was to have a film to follow the success of Wonder Woman, which is likely one more reason why they have brought a female director on board, and why Jill Soloway references ‘mythology.’ Wonder Woman drew some of its mythological resonance from Greek Myth. But when the guy notes in the article that Red Sonja doesn’t have that kind of link, he’s obviously unaware of the connections to Scathach in some of the earlier Red Sonja comics.
Like many others here though I’d rather see REH’s original Red Sonya of Rogatino on screen, and Von Kalmbach. She was already intrinsically compatible with Hollywood’s current sensibilities 80 or so years ago.

I'll cool my heels until the Sonja movie is out and reports from Howard fans come in. I'm not going to get my hopes up, or hate on it before its even out. A Jirel of Joiry movie might be appealing too, yes?

We’ll just have to see how the Sonja movie proceeds. I’m not even expecting the chain mail bikini, though she’d get props if she found a way to work it in even as wry commentary.

I'm a big fan of S&S cheesecake, but even I find the chain mail bikini stupid.
Maybe Sonja could be hurriedly rifling through an armoury, trying to outfit herself for an upcoming battle. she picks up a chain mail bra and looks at it in confusion briefly before tossing it aside.

I always thought REH's description of Red Sonya in Shadow of the Vulture was a good combination between glamour and practicality.

I thought this was a good look for Sonja, from one of the better stories to feature her.
