We had a thread similar to this on the Old Forum. It looked at "What If?" scenarios involving various directors and actors/actresses. There were two aborted attempts--if they can be called that--at a Conan movie before CtB82. One was Harryhausen's prior to the making of The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. The other one was in the '50s. A fairly reliable source claims that John Ford had read the Gnome Press edition of Conan the Conqueror. Ford mentioned this to John Wayne during a session of hard drinking. He wanted to make a movie of it starring Victor Mature, but Wayne said it sounded like something he'd want to do. Things got sidetracked, Ford left his copy of CtC on the table and nothing ever came of it. Anyway, this thread isn't specifically about either of those possible Conan projects, though both can be discussed. It's all about spitballing ideas for movies with directors like Anthony Mann and actors such as Clint Walker or William Smith. As with the old thread, the game is to match up plausible casts and directors--ie, they could've all realistically gotten together and made the movie. No "all-stars from any time period" crap. Work with what history gives us

Gojko Mitic, the Serbian actor, director, stuntman and author. He starred in a number of East German Red Westerns from 1960's till the early 1980's. He usually starred as an American Indian hero in these flicks, with a supporting cast of Turkic, Mongolian and Siberian actors as the American Indians. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gojko_Mitić

I think Jack's fellow central Pennsylvanian Charles Bronson might have made the perfect late 50s/early 60s Conan, except for the fact he was 5' 8". Still not a guy you want to tangle with (the story about him scaring off a thief in Rome with just his voice is killer!). IMDB has in its trivia section he was under consideration for the Milius film, but he was over 60 at the time so I find that hard to believe.
I actually don't think big guns like Ford or Hawks would've been good fits for Conan. If Harryhausen did Conan, he had solid guys for direction with Juran, Chaffey and Enfield (though Stanley Baker might have had to have been Conan). Richard Fleischer could have done it in the 50s or 60s instead of having to wait until the 80s.
You would have thought the peplums would have tried to do some S&S stories but apart from Homer, Virgil and Sophocles, they didn't really use things from authors.

Here's an excerpt from a William Stout interview concerning Jack Palance (I'm pretty certain that I've posted this on another thread, cant seem to find it): - In this Comic Art interview (from 1996), you are quoted as saying "...when I was more involved in the production design of films, I'd meet everybody who came in for casting and stuff. You know, when I was working on CONAN, Nick Nolte came in, and Jack Palance, and Joe Don Baker..." Do you remember for which part/role/character each of these three actors were considered? I assume Palance was up for the Conan's father role, right? - Yes. He pushed heavily for the lead (the role of Conan himself), though. Had he been a younger man he would have been absolutely perfect. I suggested both Jack Palance and William Smith for the film. On my first day of work, I put a picture of William Smith on my drawing board with the notice: "This guy has got to be in the film!" Both Smith and Palance are terrific actors with great bone structure. They both looked like they belonged in a CONAN movie. www.conancompletist.com/EN/william_stout.html

I always dreamed of a late 60’s early 70’s Hammer film Conan. All that luminous technicolor, with deep blue shadows and garish scarlet blood, would have painted a striking Hyborian Age.
It would have been tough to cast Conan from their stock players. although a contemporaneous Oliver Reed had the ferocity and acting chops to maybe pull it off. But think of...
Christopher Lee as Thoth-Amon or Tsotha-Lanti. Peter Cushing as Pelias or Prospero. Ingrid Pitt as Akivasha. Martine Beswick as Belit. Caroline Munro as Valeria. Michael Gough as Yara. Horst Janson as Murilo. Raquel Welch as Zenobia. David Prowse as Pallantides.
Given the era and the resources, it couldn’t have been completely true to the source material, but what a glorious vision it might have been.

Michael Gough as Yara is just too perfect. Not sure if would've fit into Terence Fisher's wheelhouse, might have had to go to Roy Ward Baker. And let Freddie Francis go wild with the camera.

Prowse was built for Conan, but his face and voice weren't optimal for that role.

I'd be all in for Oliver Reed as Hammer era Conan! Reed could bring off the swordplay too, he was great in the 3 and 4 Musketeers.

It occurred to me that James Garner might have made a good "Beyond the Black River" Conan after watching his role as the frontier scout Remsberg in Duel at Diablo the other day, Garner wasn't a huge man but at 6'2" he's wasn't small and the director Ralph Nelson did a great job at presenting a very gritty and violent story. And now for no reason at all he's my photoshop mashup of Clint Walker as 1968 Conan for your "What if" musings <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="13.860000000000014" style="position: absolute; width: 10.600000000000023px; height: 13.860000000000014px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 5px; top: 88px;" id="MoatPxIOPT1_91070011" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="13.860000000000014" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 13.86px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 88px;" id="MoatPxIOPT1_15216775" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="13.860000000000014" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 13.86px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 716px;" id="MoatPxIOPT1_80650406" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="13.860000000000014" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 13.86px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 716px;" id="MoatPxIOPT1_52519239" scrolling="no"></iframe>
