Is Savage Sword going to be an ongoing series like Conan The Barbarian? Yes, but it looks like it'll be concentrating on shorter stories like the original SSOC compared to the ongoing narrative of CTB. Then again, that may change once the first story arc is done, but it's what we've got to go on for now. Thanks. I'll have to add that to my pull list at the comic book store.

I always preferred Savage Sword to the CtB series. CtB seemed to be aimed at kids, while SSoC was more adult and graphic. It felt more like Howard's Conan to me.

So Conan meets Pirates of the Caribbean... Will there be a Jack Sparrow character?
If CtB is the bowdlerized version and SSoC for "mature" readers, I suppose I could get behind the latter, but I just can't help thinking this is more like a cash grab. At least Dark Horse followed a chronology, interspersed with filler pastiches of varying quality and occasional one shots and limited run series. So we're now back to random monsters/situations of the month, with a perpetually shirtless traveler?

i like the cover by Alex Ross. Will be looking out for that. Some of the Ron Garney art seems ok, but sometimes comes across as a little unfinished, like some are rough sketches before the detail and finish work is applied, but that's just me. I like this variant cover by Kaare Kyle Andrews for SSOC 3

Here's a panel with some colour by Richard Isanove.

Colour? In Savage Sword? I'm out.
Well, maybe not just yet.

A B&W magazine just isn't going to light a fire under too many people these days. Just the way it is. Now it might be interesting somewhere along the way (as a nice little double dip) to do a B&W version of the first issue as a "Rough Cut" or something like that.

I'd grapple with Old Father Set himself to get a cheap, B&W Conan mag on the shelves at Wal-Mart, Target, etc.

Aye. Those were the days — browsing the magazine section and its plentiful selection. Digital medium's experience can't hold a candle to it. I understand the need for it, but. . . it does not evoke the same emotion. Most store's magazine section these days, if they even have one, is like a couple feet wide. And even then most of the magazines are those silly $14.95 Super Specials. I really wanted a black and white SSOC. If it is not black and white its just another Conan comic, not SSOC (in my opinion). The black and white art style is additive to form and function in many ways, not a subtraction.
That said, I understand the market has changed. Although, Walking Dead is still B&W, with all of its immense popularity.

It wouldn't have been a bad idea to launch Savage Sword in black & white just to set it apart from the main book. Right now it seems to be the red-headed stepchild of the main title with nothing really going for it. But like Johnny said, there probably isn't much of a market for something like that these days.
Since they didn't put it out in b&w or under the MAX imprint, I don't think this title will be successful. It's basically the B book of the line.

Looking at the current market it appears to be looking that way. I hope SSOC survives as an ongoing title, if not I guess it'll probably be published in the mini-series format like the Age of Conan.

An artist's inadequacies and flaws are exposed in black and white, no smearing the edges with a bit of colour, so for black and white to work, the art must be exceptional. This was the cast in the original SSoC, or at least almost always so.
And the big question, will Hyborian War be advertising on the back cover again?
