Conan The Barbarian: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 2Description: The legend of Conan continues! Tired of the thieving life, Conan signs on as a mercenary for the warring kingdom of Turan. The enemy will tell of Conan's legendary skill in battle - if any of them live to tell the tale - but palace intrigue may prove more dangerous to the barbarian. After all, it's never wise to bed a wizard's woman. Then, Conan joins with Red Sonja for a multipart adventure. Last, but far from least, we present Roy Thomas and Gil Kane's never-before-reprinted GIANT-SIZE adaptation of "The Hour of the Dragon," the iconic story of how Conan became king and conqueror and met the woman who would become his wife. And it's all restored to the original coloring!
COLLECTING: CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1970) 27-51, ANNUAL (1973) 1, GIANT-SIZE CONAN (1974) 1-4 AND MATERIAL FROM SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN (1974) 1, 8 AND 10

They seem to be doing some slight editing on the artwork. The heavy black tone used by Adams in the lower left originally lay over Conan's left boot as well, but it looks as if they've removed it from that example. ...... Well spotted Kail. I wonder if the original tone/shadow work was a little too difficult to restore convincingly? It looks like they have selected the area and manipulated the contrast and opacity too much.

Hmm, I just noticed the SSOC #1 listed in the issue run last night, could they possibly be putting Curse of the Undead Man right before #43 where it belongs?

I guess we'll probably get the colour version (CtB #78) near the end of the 3rd volume. I'm looking forward to these CtB omnibus editions.

My mapping back when this was all theoretical had the Maroto Red Sonja story and Curse of the Undead Man from SSOC #1 both before #43 and in their color versions with a newly but authentically colored version of the two page spread that was replaced by the one page spread in #78 (the one pager would be a bonus in the back). They're being comprehensive, I was being overly imaginative.

Alas, all of Glynis Wein's lovely subtle colours in the original comic have been lost, particularly the oranges and reds that were used for Sonja's hair. That close-up of her face in the new version is just horrible - no other word for it, I'm afraid. ...... Yeah, there's something wrong with the brightness of the colours they appear to be in the right place but don't blend/bleed in properly - it looks like they've slapped on the orange and red with a heavy hand. On the plus side, it's an incredible improvement on what DH gave us. Here's a scan of the original page:

Yeah, there shoulda been more Adams art on Conan.
I mean this as no disrespect to Ron Garney, but Marvel shoulda launched the new SSOC series with Neal Adams art, they had an entire year to convince him.
