I'm kind of surprised Marvel are going for a crossover so soon, but Conan will be appearing in Avengers: No Road Home #6, available March 2019. "The all-new weekly Avengers event continues in March with an epic story from Al Ewing, Mark Waid, and Jim Zub, with art by Sean Izaakse and Paco Medina – and the famed barbarian himself is slashing his way into the Marvel Universe in AVENGERS: NO ROAD HOME! It all starts when The Scarlet Witch enters the Hyborian Age, and continues when the Avengers take their fight to the Queen of the Night! And while Conan and the Avengers will fight together, the question remains…whose side is Conan really on? It’s an action-filled, jam-packed story that you won’t want to miss, and it all starts in AVENGERS: NO ROAD HOME #6 – when the Marvel Universe will be forever changed, by Crom!" comicbook.com/marvel/2018/12/07/conan-the-barbarian-joins-the-marvel-universe-avengers/

They held back for, what, a whole three months before crossing over?

Do people buy crossovers? They must. I buy 'em when they make sense, like Conan/Red Sonja, or the Dark Horse Fire and Stone crossover with all of their Alien lines: Prometheus, Aliens, AvP, Predator.
But, Conan/Avengers? I'll pass.

They're taking the piss, right? Are they trying to kill the Conan franchise?

I think, structurally how Marvel have approached the Cimmerian and his world in all 3 books allows the possibility, unfortunately, of either the addition of Marvel characters into the Hyborian Age (more likely) or Conan into the contemporary Marvel Universe (less likely). Age of Conan (mini-series) and SSOC (ongoing) appear to be 5 issue story-arcs with different creative teams for each arc.
The initial 12 issue story-arc in Conan the Barbarian is an introduction to the Cimmerian, jumping around to different periods of his life and probably his final adventure. So, from what I can ascertain, in the first year there's no identifiable commitment regarding the direction of CtB.

Sounds like Conan will be more like the two-dimensional comic book hero do-gooder than the brooding, savage, complicated character that Howard created.

The Conan in the Avengers crossover may be a two dimensional character, yet the one in the regular series may be approached differently. We'll just have to see next month at least as far as the regular series is concerned.

If Conan puts a yard of steel into Tony Stark's guts, I might buy it.

If Conan puts a yard of steel into Tony Stark's guts, I might buy it. It'll be more impressive if he's still in the suit!
