Cool article about the early days of scholarly categorization and naming of armour, especially mail/maille: www.arador.com/armour/chain-mail/The confusion engendered -- especially by Meyrick's literal interpretations of the Bayeux tapestry -- would appear to have filtered down to REH and even D&D.

Years ago, I visited the Cairo Museum. At that time the iron dagger was in a case and you could lean over and look at it from just a few inches away. After millennia, it still retains much of its polish and there is a special thrill in seeing your own face reflected in the oldest iron weapon known to exist.
