I have to admit, this kinda looks good.

Don’t pay me no mind with my comment above. I’m just being a hamfisted gorilla as usual.
This looks like a well rounded yarn with a nice twist and an interesting premise. The writer Meredith Finch is a mother with three young sons so likely knows well what it’s like to have sluggers on the team.
She’s the writer on the Valeria title too.
Marvel ought to run more one shots like this.

Marvel ought to run more one shots like this. Yeah, this one shot feels more like the ol' SSOC - admittedly, a colour version. All they need to do is make the stories 20 to 30 pages longer. It should not be a problem considering the creative teams change so frequently on this title.

I have to admit, this kinda looks good. Besides my issues with the pages you see in the preview, the rest of this issue is pretty good. The art is a massive improvement over the last arc

Reviews in action: Hey there, in the second panel, is a call-out to Harakht, a Roy Thomas creation rarely if ever encountered since Marvel's Belit saga in Conan the Barbarian back when comics cost 35 cents. Sure, I put a throwaway mention of it into Conan and the Emerald Lotus, but nobody's ever noticed it, so that doesn't count. I like the author's little nods to those who came before her. Shows awareness of, and respect for, the character's history. Art looks pretty good, too.

The art for me is still average.
Maybe I need glasses, but I'll pass it again.

Hopefully, we get more of the same in the Valeria book.

The art for me is still average. Maybe I need glasses, but I'll pass it again. I strongly recommend reconsidering, this issue is the only thing Marvel has released in their new run that actually feels like the old Savage Sword magazines. Even if your not too fond of the art(admittedly, it gave me a classic Savage Sword vibe), Merideth Finch’s prose and storytelling will compensate. Conan doesn't have a lot to say in this story, there just weren't any situations where talking was necessary. BUT, the narration is really good, and gives you insight occasionally as to what Conan is thinking or planing. This is my favorite from what marvel has released so far from there new Conan comics.

In the good old days, the panel with the mention of Thorfel would've warranted a nice little box down the bottom with something like "Savage Tales #4 or Marvel Treasury Edition #15-Rascally Roy". But these days they don't want to mention anything old. I remember Tom Brevoort was one of the ones pushing for it, and he was one of the last people I would've ever thought would be for that since the books he edited at the time were steeped in Marvel lore, particularly Avengers and Thunderbolts. Oh well.
Very enjoyable issue and it made me go back and reread the MTE #15 version of Night of the Dark God. They knew how to colorized B&W stories back then, you'd never know it was originally a B&W story. They seem incapable of pulling that off today. Oh well indeed.

A bit of spoiler for those who haven't read this: My favorite part of the whole issue was the last panel, which was also the last thing Thorfel's nephew ever saw. I got a good chuckle out of that.

This was a good issue. To my mind probably the most roundly satisfying single issue of any of the new Conan mags we've seen thus far.
It was the author's first attempt at writing the Cimmerian, and a one-shot single issue in the bargain.
Made me think. When was the last time we has a single issue Conan comic story that was this good?
I'm looking forward to Age of Conan: Valeria with real curiosity.

Using Thorfiel was a good idea, but wasted. Any previous enemy, even a slaver could have been substituted. Thorfiel could have been given the status of recurring enemy. A lost opportunity. Still, it was at least a nod to the old continuity, unlike Conan the Barbarian 6, where Conan meets an unscarred Yezdigerd. This means that continuity is now fluid ... if it serves a story, it is in effect, if it doesn't, then it is tossed out. This mean anything can be done to Conan at any time, and the next issue, ignored. I complained about this before. What does legacy numbering mean if there is no legacy? Is there an editor who cares about the legacy, or is it just one, disconnected issue, after another?

This issue has pique my interest in Age of Conan: Valeria. A series I had zero enthusiasm for beforehand.
