I thought this was neat. First-ever image of a black hole. Sounds crazy, but they swear it is really a picture of a black hole. Makes me wonder . . . is the USS Cygnus hovering just outside that event horizon?
"Scientists have obtained the first image of a black hole, using Event Horizon Telescope observations of the center of the galaxy M87. The image shows a bright ring formed as light bends in the intense gravity around a black hole that is 6.5 billion times more massive than the Sun..."
I loved Maximillian after seeing this. I guess I was ten at the time. S.T.A.R. was cool, too!
Astronomers have suspected that the M87 galaxy has a supermassive black hole at its heart from false colour images such as this one. The dark centre is not a black hole but indicates that stars are densely packed and fast moving.
