Another possibility: Is it after Rogues in the House, when Conan left Corinthia and went back to Zamora for a while?

I went back and reread Zub's arc as well as #6 to see if they read better after Serpent War #1, in other words with the knowledge there's a solid, well done Conan story in the MU now, things aren't as hopeless as they were a few months back. The writing for the Gambler arc is good, but it's still sort of linked more to a modern type of storytelling, which takes me out of the story a bit. There's also a bunch of anachronistic things like people's speech patterns that work against it too. #6 is still the best of the pre-Roy issues, though it has its issues as well.

I read Conan: The Gambler in one sitting today, reread #7, then #8 and #9. I have to say, this is probably the best arc that modern Marvel has put out. I agree with johnny that there are anachronisms that do pop up, but overall this was very enjoyable. This actually felt like a Conan comic, solid pastiche. I love Zircher and really enjoyed the panel of Conan emerging from the darkness in gore. The Cimmerian killing the keepers of the den and the goddess returning to her true form really felt like Conan moments.
I'm glad Sub is on the ongoing, he has a better handle on this character and setting than anyone else I've read in the new Marvel stuff.
I have Roy Thomas' arc slated next.
