Anyone else caught this on Netflix? German series, dubbed into English. Rome vs the Germanic tribes in the Teutobourg Forest. Nice look and feel.

Yeah, watched the series over two nights last week. At times it felt like it was trying to tell too big of a tale within the confines of the time constraints and limited budget, but I still enjoyed it alright. Hopefully a second season is approved, along with a few more Deutsche Marks in the budget to make this the epic it deserves to be.

This was a good show to watch for a few nights. I liked it, but yeah it could have used a larger budget. It didn't look bad or low budget but this wasn't Game of Thrones level money either.
I liked how they went all in by using Norse Mythology as the basis for their Proto-Germanic mythology within the show. It seemed like they kind of reverse engineered it given the shared history between them. I knew they came from the same source material but they really went all in. I figured Woden and Thunor would have been mentioned but I didn't expect them to use the Ragnarok myth as I've never heard that mentioned in a Proto-Germanic context, only on the Norse side. The way they set it against the nationalistic mythology of Rome was interesting, too. In one the "wolf" is the antagonist and in the other the beast is a revered figure. Very cool.

IMO, the trailer reminded me of a "poor mans" Britannia (which I lost interest in/gave up on mid-season). How does Barbarians compare?
