I was initially tempted to agree with this, but then I hesitated. Writing prose and writing comics are very different. Comic writers can rely on artists to enhance the story or fill in the blanks, but prose writers only get to use words. Also, a surprising number of Roy Thomas' Conan stories are adaptations of REH stories and pastiches (both Conan and other characters). This involves Roy translating existing prose into text that works well in the comic medium. He's obviously good at this, but it means he's not making up the stories himself. That said, there are times when I enjoy Roy's Conan (along with the accompanying illustrations) better than REH's Conan.
(Of course, I suffer from Aphantasia, which means I can't picture things in my mind. Comic books are often more appealing to me than prose because they have pictures I can see. When I read straight prose, my imagination has limits...)

That being said, I'd have loved to see a Thomas story illustrated by Barry involving Belit. Roy does adapt quite a lot of his work but he does it in a way unlike anyone could come close, he is very proficient at it, Not to mention that avidly adapting something while staying true to the original could possibly take more time than actually chicken-doodling a fresh story.

chicken doodling is tough, even if no writing is involved

As a kid, when I first read the little soft cover books with the Frazetta covers, I never made a differentiation when L Sprague DeCamp inserted his stuff and enjoyed it seamlessly. I know on this board most are critical of him though, but I don't know why exactly.

When people do Sherlock Holmes pastiches, they don't try to publish them integrated with the canon 60. DeCamp and Carter's fill ins can be enjoyed on their own but they could've done something like what they ended up doing with Conan the Swordsman: present the stories and let readers know where they "should" be placed. They could still do that today.

Similarly, my first exposure to Conan was the SSOC comics primarily written by Thomas, years before I knew about the original Howard stories.
