Finally got around to reading the autobiography that Oliver Stone put out last summer, it’s titled “Chasing The Light”
The book focuses more on his abilities as a writer (more notably, screenwriting) than his forte at filmmaking. There is a great section in chapter five where he discusses his time writing the script for Conan the Barbarian. It includes a nice anecdote of him doing a private reading with Arnold so he could better adapt the script’s dialogue. Stone also mentions his appreciation for Robert E. Howard and his excitement to be given the job.
Not sure if the forum is strictly ’sword & sorcery’, or if there are folks here that are just as big of fans of Oliver as I am (I can go on all day about his movies, loved most of them); but I felt this was a good mention for all Conan enthusiasts. Worth the read regardless.
Enjoy, chaps!

Even though the film changed a lot for his original treatment, it still retains the Stone ‘bluntness’ for lack of a better word. He doesn’t really deal in subtleties, he is in your face. Milius kept this aspect of the story and melded it with his own vision.
