Watched the premiere last night.....
Ragnar, you're sorely missed...
I don't think any of the other actors or characters have the charisma to take his place. Ivar and the new Battle Bishop have the best chance, but we'll have to see.
It wasn't a bad premiere, but once again I fear splitting the action into four settings will just water down the story: England, Kattegat, Mediterranean, and Iceland...

Ivar and the new Battle Bishop have the best chance, but we'll have to see. Agreed. I think Ivar might be able to pull it off, and his character has a lot going for him. Bishop Heahmund is shaping up to be a promising new addition to the cast too, and I'm sure Jonathan Rhys Meyers will do a fine job. I do miss Ragnar, but I really enjoyed this premiere. Big mistake for Lagertha not to kill Finehair!

Oh, boy....this could be rough. Without Ragnar this show has no focus and lacks an engaging on-screen presence.
Don't get me wrong, it was funny seeing Bjorn and Halfdan being a half-assed Varagian Guard for that Byzantine Commander, but it ultimately went nowhere (unless it's setting something up with that sister, but who the hell knows). I also like seeing Ivar and the Warrior Bishop's relationship, but we've been here before with Ragnar and Athelstan...
I could care less about what happens to King Harald or Queen Lagertha...
Floki and his flock/cult in Iceland might be interesting, though.
Someone really needs to step it up here if the show wants to continue at the same level of quality it once had.

I think this show is done...after last night's episode I have little hope. The same flaws are there as in past seasons, but no Ragnar to keep me interested. The Ivar-Bishop plot had potential but the scene last night seemed off.

I'm watching this series on Blu-ray so I've only just seen the third episode of season 5.
I still think it's great. Obviously it's about as historical as Howard's historical adventure stories but I don't mind that at all.
The story and the characters are much more interesting than in "Game of Thrones", a series that I also like bt not as much as "Vikings".

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in! I want out, but I can't help but see what happens, and next season's promise of the Rus playing a major part is interesting. One of the problems at this point, to anybody who knows some history, is that Alfred's story is pretty much set. Any suspense from the threat of battle or conspiracy against him is lacking. King Harald too.
Spoilers ahead:
Good to see Rollo again; a great bit older, but none the wiser. Curiously lovable character given that I think he's repeated the family betrayal storyline at least three times now. His reasoning here doesn't make much sense, but he has stature that the next gen lacks.
Lagertha doesn't age as much as her hair gets dyed silver. She is subsumed in a romance plot, which I don't think is in character, but oops, he's dead now.
Ivar the Boneless has gone Alice Cooper or Robert Smith or Rob Zombie, depending on your point of reference. He was the most cunning of offspring, but now thinks mostly from his non-functioning regions. (Storyline varies btw/ him having daddy issues and mommy issues, which is it? Magic 8 ball says "Yes, and more")
Floki, come back soon. Iceland is so boring.
Bjorn gives someone the stink eye, and again and again and again. New Viking chick tries to take out his eye and is captured instead. Coming up, stinky-scarred eye.
Love the look on Judith's face when her son arrests a traitor. I have scenes now, I have scenes! Horribly depraved scenes, but God has given me a purpose. So, YES!
The recently revealed son of Ragnar should be fun. I can see him trying to be more Viking than the Vikings, until the rest say "wooo, dude!"
The battle scene btw/ Harald and Alfred was fun. I don't understand the reason behind creating the ring of fire, but it sure provided great background visuals.

Unfortunately, I've not seen a single episode of this series!
Here's the trailer for season 6

I'm hoping it's an improvement over last season and that new trailer has my hopes up.
Travis Fimmel as Ragnar and his rivalry with Clive Standen's Rollo made the show. Bjorn looks a bit more interesting here and I'm intrigued by the introduction of the Russ.

This coming season looks great so far, though, I agree.

Anyone watch the season premiere yet? I thought it was excellent. As usual, things look like they'll be heating up to a major confrontation (or two). I also think Ivar's story line is becoming very interesting...

Yeah the premiere was surprisingly great. I love Ivar hanging out with Prince Oleg and the Rus. This could get very interesting.
Everything in Kattegat is a bit meh, all been done before but it looks like we have another war coming anyway.
Just keep the show to two settings and it should be okay. Just stay in Scandavia and Kievan Rus and we should be okay.

I agree with you - Two locations is plenty. The cast has been spread a bit thin over recent seasons. I didn't care much for Floki's story in Iceland last season, but I'm hoping he shows up back in Kattegat at some point this season (and that he didn't actually die in that lame cave) - He needs to be brought back into the main plot and given a proper ending! I know his return has been teased, so a final showdown between him and Kjetill would be excellent.
