Excellent posts. Von K has summed up how to approach openings very nicely. It's very interesting to see how authors other than Howard approached the same problem. Certainly a great bit of kit to add to any aspiring writer's toolbox. Thanks Grim Wanderer.

That was a fun project; I was glad to get to take part. Your articles were really neat. I hadn't thought of categorizing the openings of Howard's (or of anyone else for that matter) stories. Very cool, indeed!

HELP & Advice for Fan-Writers When creating a new tale, do not worry about any details like place names, geographic locations, ruling king [ or dynasty ] types of weapons, or armour types,etc... I need to heed this advice.
"What kind of story can I build around the falchion? hmmmm....."

Ah....the 'Red Falchion'. Wasn't he the mighty son of the 'Crimson Hawk' ?? [ i expect to see both those characters in your next tale ? ] ==== Yeah, when you are happy with your main plot, all other details can be filled in later.

Outlines are helpful, as well as a rough draft. I try to do both but most of the time my first attempt is what gets "published"
