Those here who have seen the famous '84 fantasy film THE NEVERENDING STORY will no doubt be aware of how so many go on about how sweet and adorable the character of the Childlike Empress is. But having researched the novel on which the film was loosely based, I can tell you that the Empress is in no way likeable or sympathetic. She is actually a mask used by an alien intelligence that sustains itself from human imagination and creativity, and which gradually drains the human children it ensnares until they are left hollow shells, mental vegetables which are then discarded.

Wow, I'm glad they changed that for the movie, otherwise it would have been way too dark for a kids' film.

Did you make that up? Admittedly I read the book more than 40 years ago but in my memory the childlike empress is very wise and she's the heart of Phantasia. It would not exist without her. According to this fan-wiki she's "wise and kind" in the book: theneverendingstory.fandom.com/wiki/Childlike_Empress#:~:text=The%20Childlike%20Empress%20(also%20known,the%20mystical%20universe%20called%20Fantastica.

No, the children she draws into her world, she gets them to make wishes to enrich her realm, but what she doesn't tell them is that every time they make a wish, they lose a memory of the real world.

LOL, no. A pretty twisted interpretation of the novel.

So WTF is the deal here then? Was this just a weird interpretation of the book then? Glad to hear this alien "vampire thing" might not actually be the case.

Yeah interesting but weird debate... quote to a primary source would probably help here...

Yeah interesting but weird debate... quote to a primary source would probably help here... This sounds like horror-based creative mythography.
