CTB #9 is out. No SPOILERS, but fans of other REH characters might be happy. Rob de la Torre's art continues to impress! I see more Victor de la Fuente influence in this page. I feel sorry for anyone who sees only a "copy" of John Buscema & foolishly deprive themselves of enjoying excellent new art. Jim Zub's writing, Dean White's coloring, & Richard Starkings' lettering are likewise topshelf. Editors Chris Butera & Matt Murray should be proud of what they've brought together & inspired.
The "Wise One" might be the most interesting appearance. And I suspect the 1 that'll earn most debate.

If you wanted a more Howard grounded series, you got it in spades this issue!
I also enjoyed this issue, and that includes the history of REH's Thurian Age.
'The surviving Atlanteans, whom Howard explicitly identifies as Cro-Magnon people, were driven into Europe.'
Years ago I had posted somewhere that the Cimmerians had a Cro Magnon element about them, but was blasted for doing so by an over enthusiastic 'REH and Conan expert'.
Anyway, real page turner stuff having Conan adventure in the Thurian age, remember Conan coming across the serpent men in the original SSOC run, even an issue featuring Conan in prehistoric Australia, but that wasn't Howard of course, just a fun pastiche.
Very impressed , and nice to find out who the wise one was.
Yes, it was a nice touch, and logical as the character itself has talked about the Thurian Age in one of the Conan stories. I am looking forward to seeing him, just as the serpent-men in this new story-arc.
Wasn’t one placement of the Thurian Age 100,000 years ago? The Hyborian Age could definitely be 20,000 years ago.
Hopefully Jeffrey Shanks will elaborate in his essay why they chose this date. He has written many articles on the Thurian and Hyborian Age.
Howard himself places the time of Kull at 100,000 years ago in Kings of the Night and in a typed document with notes on several characters and their time period. That would make about 80 or 90,000 years until the time of Conan. Personally I would have preferred the latter as I tend to place the Hyborian Age at the end of the last ice age, but before the younger dryas (which would be the return of the glaciers at the end of the hyborian age). And the Younger Dryas had just been discovered and named just before Howard's time.
Marvel placed the time of Kull at 20,000 BC because it fit better with their chronology, and that has caused confusion over the years.

Not sure who that expert was that "corrected" you, but he was very wrong. In Howard's chronology the surviving atlanteans on the mainland were Cro-magnons, they devolved into apemen, then re-evolved back into the Cimmerians.

In all fairness he was an encyclopedia of knowledge when it came to so many aspects of REH and the worlds he created, so a big respect there, but man did he have a penchant for semantics and over analysing at times. Brings a smile to my face thinking about some of the discourses on this and the old forum.
Keep em coming Jeff, enjoy reading the essays at the back of the comic just as much as the title story.
