Funny Jason and the Argonauts and bad CGI come up. We watched it a few weeks ago and my son said the effects, Talos in particular, looked better than a lot of the Marvel films these days. We rewatched Shang Chi two weeks ago and on a big screen 4k TV, it looked like something from the Disney Channel. Dr. Strange (the original) though did not.

Does anyone else miss 90 minute movies? It seems like every movie these days is double that length and I find as I get older I have less and less patience to watch long movies.
I really wish they would just bring back shorter movies that tell us a story and wrap up the story, not lead to a series of sequels. I realize this sounds like a grumpy old man complaining lol.

If the movie is good, I don't mind. But all the recent capeshit going 2 hours and 10 minutes or 15 minutes is not necessary.

I think it's partially due to the fact it costs so darn much to go to the movies, anything shorter than 2 hours feels like a ripoff. the "short" films feel more like what you can watch on TV. Funny thing is we watch the Blondie films on Movies! every Saturday morning and the longest one of those was like 70 minutes and it felt it!

Well, I’m looking forward to seeing this long awaited sequel. I enjoyed the first film a great deal, despite it’s flaws. Better than most of the MCU extravaganzas dumped on moviegoers over the last decade or so… To each their own I guess, but I have to agree with you about the MCU stuff they have been churning out in the last several years. For instance, some of the computer imagery from the Avengers movies looks cartoonish at times, like a cheap stitch up job. Go back 17 years and I still think the 2005 King Kong film looks as good or even better than most of the CGI films that came afterwards. Agreed. The 2005 Kong is one of my favorites, and still holds up visually today.

These days it seems that they are just churning out too many CGI riddled and non engaging extravagenza that look fake as anything and was designed for a quick buck for the movie studios and the actors involved, many who probably don't care too deeply for the project beyond the $$$ return. It's a rip off.
Good acting, well timed choreography, realistic stunts and the use of pyrotechnics for bullet hits, vehicle and structural explosions are often missing, practical effects so to speak, instead too much over reliance on CGI at the expense of everything else. CGI is important, but it's only one tool in the movie making arsenal. All too often I feel like I'm watching a computer generated animation.
That is not to say that I want go to the movies, I will, there are good things out there, that's why we are on this forum, we like this sort of stuff, so I will be coming out of cinemas saying 'that was really good' or 'that was a load of dogshit', but with the way the world economic situation is going and everything skyrocketing in prices, things will get real to the point where we might think 'do I really want to throw my money away on this bullsit'.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing a scenario where the entire Hollywood industry caves in on itself at this point and the current self-induced economic situation might help it along on that path. There are a lot of great older movies out there to explore and I have no issue buying used DVDs off eBay. In fact, I just realized the other day how many cool war movies my Dad used to watch that I vaguely remember as a kid that I should check out again, probably starting with Bridge over the River Kwai. And for me, most of that older stuff I could watch with my kids. I'm happy that, from the beginning I gave them a baseline of older movies and 80s cartoons and now when I introduce something of that aged look, they don't scoff like I imagine some kids would do.

My son loves WWII stories, we’ve done the Great Escape so far and have a lot more on the agenda.

Looks like it's worth watching, the dark images of death, both surreal and real. Set in eastern Europe and considering the current war, makes it all the more poignant.

The blu-ray of Walter Hill’s Extreme Prejudice was released a couple weeks back. I saw it decades ago on videotape and don’t believe it ever had a proper DVD release. It looks gorgeous in remastered wide screen.
If you don't know this 1987 flick, you oughta. It's a modern-day (1980’s) narco-western by the guy who directed The Warriors, The Long Riders, 48 Hours, The Driver and more. And it kicks ass. This is a big budget flick positively boiling over with testosterone fueled action. The cast includes Nick Nolte, Powers Booth, Michael Ironside, Clancy Brown, William Forsythe, Rip Torn and (to supply some estrogen) Maria Conchita Alonso. There's plentiful gritty action and violence and by the bullet riddled climax there are precious few survivors. This movie is so goddam manly by the time I finished it I'd grown sideburns an inch and a half thick.
Cost me next to nothing at Best Buy and looks like a bargain everywhere I see it on sale. Check it out. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

While we are on Milius and Nolte I'm going to drop in "Farewell to the King" as a recommendation, Gerry Lopez is in that one too. Also for Nolte I'd also recommend "The Deep" , great adventure flick with a great cast. Keith mentioned The Warriors, Long Riders, 48 Hours, and The Driver, that's a damn good playlist for any action fan.
