The "Epemitreus" board hasn't been getting near enough love and that's a shame. The one on the Old Forum got quite a workout. This thread will be for discussing various Tor pastiches, because many reviewers out there on the Webz have reviewed more than one Tor in the same post. In addition, de Camp laid down fairly stringent guidelines on what could -- and could not -- appear in the Tor pastiches, so that can also be discussed here. Most of the old Bantam pastiches were later reprinted by Tor, so they kind of count as well. Any member is more than welcome to start a separate thread on a specific Tor pastiche book even if it's mentioned/reviewed in this thread.A list of the Tor pastiches: www.librarything.com/series/Tor+Books+Conan+Series

Any thoughts on Robert Jordan's Conan pastiches? They are the only pastiches i can afford on amazon right now.

I agree, the Tor works deserve greater attention. Yes, we can all agree that some were, well, a little off the mark. But some great writers put their all into many of these books, and are worthy of our attention. I look forward to some opinions and I'll post some of my thoughts as well. I do not have them all, but I have a decent selection to choose from.

my favorite Jordans are Conan the Magnificent and Conan the Defender which I really liked a lot I enjoyed the Jordans as well, but can't recall which ones I had. They were part of my original collection that burned that I never replaced. It used to be if it had Conan on it - I bought it. I later focused mostly on REH's originals stuff when I began collecting again. Having read this thread, though, has me wanting to get some of those old pastiches again because I really did enjoy them, non-REH not withstanding.

I do not have them all, but I have a decent selection to choose from. I covered 12 of the Tor pastiches over the course of 5 blog posts. Basically, I really liked the John Maddox Roberts stories (better Conan storyteller) and Robert Jordan stories (better overall storyteller), though not as much as I enjoyed the original REH stories, and after one mediocre story each from Steve Perry, Roland Green, and Leonard Carpenter, I didn't have much interest in continuing. everydayshouldbetuesday.wordpress.com/2017/08/17/summer-of-conan-robert-jordan-pastiches/everydayshouldbetuesday.wordpress.com/2017/08/31/summer-of-conan-steve-perrys-conan-the-fearless/everydayshouldbetuesday.wordpress.com/2017/09/07/summer-conan-john-maddox-roberts-pastiches/everydayshouldbetuesday.wordpress.com/2017/09/14/summer-conan-roland-green-conan-and-the-death-lord-of-thanza/everydayshouldbetuesday.wordpress.com/2017/09/21/summer-of-conan-leonard-carpenters-conan-the-heroEventually I want to read them all, and I still have 6 or so pastiches already on my shelves, but I think they are way down my TBR list. I would much rather read REH's other stories, or re-read his originals, or finally read some Leiber or C.L. Moore.

A post I wrote over at BlackGate.com last year, commenting on the wide range of quality in the Tor pastiches.

I finished the 3 Del Rey Conan books, and have now moved on to the TOR pastiches. My question is that some of the books were printed in a larger paperback size 5" x 8", which I find a lot easier to read, but I can't find a listing of what books in series were printed in the larger size?

I don't have a complete list at hand but .. 6 of Robert Jordan's novels were collected in hardcover, THE CONAN CHRONICLES (not to be confused with the Marvel comic trade paperbacks reissued by Dark Horse, THE CHRONICLES OF CONAN) and THE FURTHER CHRONICLES OF CONAN. CONAN AT THE DEMON'S GATE (Roland Green,) CONAN THE DEFIANT (Steve Perry,) CONAN THE VALOROUS (John Maddox Roberts,) and CONAN AND THE TREASURE OF THE PYTHON (John Maddox Roberts) all had trade paperback editions that I know of. I might be missing one or two. I need to check at home if there were any others.

Hi Lonewolf. CONAN AND THE EMERALD LOTUS [ by John Hocking ] had a large trade paperback edition [ i have a treasured 1 signed by wonderful 'Emerald' Hocking ] Good luck finding the sizes you want. [ it could be very hard to find size info on the second hand book sites? ] Only about 30% of the Tors are worth reading [ the other 2 thirds of em are crapp, and some much worse than crapp ] [ avoid all by green, carpenter, and perry] >> although perrys 1st book [fearless] was ok for me: very entertaining + fond memories. It was first published in trade paperback by Tor Books in February 1986.
