You'd think they'd have wanted something classy for the first issue, but this collage looks amateurish, and the choice of image and use of text is uninspiring, to say the least. ...... Yeah, it's kinda unfortunate; from what I have seen of the previews, there's no original art in the first 5 pages! Just a patchwork of old Marvel Conan artwork assembled in an, I agree, amateurish fashion, overwhelmed by filters from photoshop. The penciller Mahmud Asrar shoulda illustrated this double page spread - something like the Buscema stuff from the good ol' days: Or even Tomás Giorello.

I can't really say I found anything wrong with the first issue. (Other than Some of the faces are drawn too cartoony for my taste.)
I didn't get overly excited about it though. It may as well have been another Dark Horse issue.
And that bothers me. I'm not sure what to feel.
Haven't read the prose story in the back yet.

I've read the first issue, here are my thoughts.
The artwork is good, but nothing exceptional. I would call the art more stylistic than realistic. Not necessarily a bad thing, just not to my personal tastes. The story was fine, something you'd expect of a S&S story, but a bit weak. While there is no overt use of PC, the choice of words lends a feeling of restraint to the story. As if they wanted to go further but couldn't think of a way without offending someone. However, this isn't unexpected (from me at least). The original Conan the Barbarian comics from Marvel were always a bit tamer in the art and how the story was told compared to Savage Sword.
As for the new novella, I think it picks up where Conan and the Emerald Lotus leaves off, but it's been a long time since I read it so I could be wrong. It starts as many Conan stories do and could end up being very good, but being spread out over 12 issues it will be a few issues before we can really get a feel of the story.
I would call CtB #1/276 a restrained start for Marvel's relaunch. I hope it gets better from here.

Pretty well how I feel about it . A reintroduction/relaunch of the character but really have to see where it goes from here over Conan's lifetime. I hope the witch/kids don't show up at different periods. Be interesting to see how they treat Conan after this first arc.Art was OK , better than his X-Men stuff. Yes the novella takes place after John's book and before the next one.

I wonder if Marvel using all that old art is their way of saying, "Been there, done that" in regards to the adaptations. I see at least a handful in that spread.
Without Truman and Giorello doing them, I'm at the point where I just want quality pastiche in my Conan comics.
I haven't read or bought the issue yet but I'm not a big fan of the art from what I've seen. It's unfair to compare to Giorello, but you can't really unsee something that high quality.
I read Aaron's first Thor run which had a similar structure to this (Young Thor, Modern Thor, All-Father Thor) and enjoyed it a great deal. He knows how to weave a story through multiple time periods, but I just hope it isn't too similar.
I'm hoping to pick this up either this week or next week.

I picked up a copy of Conan the Barbarian today. My verdict: Excellent. OK. I was previously skeptical and cynical when I heard that Conan was back in the Marvel fold, but I wanted to be hard. I mean, those guys probably look at these sites occasionally, and it is always good to give the impression that you expect nothing less than first rate. The comic I picked off the racks had the cover by Kirbi Fagan, but I promptly swapped it for one by Esad Ribic, although if I saw the Lucio Parrillo variant I might have snatched that one up. Interior art by Mahmud Asrar, impressive, didn’t hold back. I read a post where someone said Asrar’s art looked a little manga, but I think even if you were forced to pull apart some scenes that might have looked ‘kinda manga’, it was nothing overt. I mean, look at this. This is cool heroic barbaric fantasy, timeless. No post modern political agendas or ideologies, just good ol fashioned heroic fantasy, entertaining, fun and you finish the book wanting more. I will not give anything away to those who haven’t read it yet, but it is worth checking out. The whole Razazel business has me disturbed ( disturbed for me is code for good ). I want the cover by Esad Ribic for issue 2. Jason Aaron gets the material, writes it like someone that is both a fan and a good writer. Just as much looking forward to the continuation of the novella ‘Black Starlight’ as much as part 2 of ‘The Weird of the Crimson Witch’. The retailer told me that SSOC will hit the stands shortly. Wonder if I will be collecting both or choosing one over the other. So cool having Conan associated with Marvel again after all these decades. Not disappointed so far. This is one for the fans.

I had totally forgotten that this came out in January. I plan on picking up a copy today. And I also found out that (at least according to twitter) Jason Aaron is in my neck of the woods!

Grabbed it last night. There were still plenty of copies sitting on the shelf, so I hope that's not a bad sign. Anyway, so far so good with the story and art. We'll see...

Issue 2 in two weeks. I think it will take at least six issues to really get a feel for this new Conan. I think I'm going to like it.

Picked up the 2 Ribic covers yesterday.
As we could tell from the original solicitation, conceptually the first 12 issues share similarities to Aaron's initial Thor story-arc weaving a yarn together skipping through different stitches of time throughout the life of Conan and interestingly maybe relating the Cimmerian's eventual death. I found it refreshing that for once, we had a fast paced action packed comic not tied down to another REH adaptation. It gives, I think, Aaron the opportunity to be more creative with his storytelling and thankfully, there appears to be nothing obviously contradictory to the original stories, for now, anyways.
The art by Mahmud Asrar seems an improvement on his previous work and there's a little bit more of a roughness to his line-work and at times I noticed the influence of Buscema's Conan in Asrar's rendition of the Cimmerian. I think there's a slight inconsistency with the face of Conan, but, it's still a lot better than I expected. I hope to see him really develop his style on this run. I enjoyed the Black Starlight by John Hocking, with a nice dedication to Roy Thomas and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the yarn. Overall, as a package this first issue is a great start to the series, and I dunno what it is? probably nostalgia, but it just seems to feel right with Conan back at Marvel.
