It's on in a couple of minutes on Film4. I'll try to watch the whole movie this time. ...i heard you screaming in fury... then sound of a screen being smashed... then it all went quiet. ==== hope you enjoyed some of it? which is your fave scene, bit? == too many v silly /stupid crapp scenes to list. my fave examples of total lunatic-shite are... - the 8 elephants carrying the big ship !!! - the wooden ship smashing thru the fort gate/wall !!! - the conan-aimed siege catapult hits perfect, first time, at v long distance !!! [ i cant get that garbage outa my head ] I liked kid Conan even though the trial/test with the egg and the ease in which he killed the Picts was ridiculous. I think the best thing about the movie and unfortunately it turns out to be the worst aspect of the movie is that physically Momoa moved like Conan in the action sequences. But all of that was destroyed by poor choreography and bad editing in the fight scenes. The dialogue did not help and Momoa at times looked over-eager in the execution of his lines, an experienced, competent director shoulda have helped him loosen up a bit; cos I think he naturally has that charming roguish quality about him, any director worth his salt should know how to get the best out of the actors. I'd probably need a few gallons of Fermented Mare's milk from the Orkhon valley to even attempt a list of all that's wrong with the movie. Thanks Bux.

Stupid egg race aside, I thought the kid playing young Conan at least had the right attitude for it.

Momoa identified the problem with the script, Conan 2011 doing poorly. "I was a comic book fan and a huge admirer of Frank Frazetta and when he died during our filming, it was so sad because I wanted him to see it and say 'Wow, that's my Conan!' Just looking at his paintings, I wanted to put that up on the screen. I absolutely remember seeing that one where Conan's standing on a pile of skulls and it's seared into your memory and a I felt like Marcus Nispel is a pretty visually amazing director. There's just a lot of things that came into it and sometimes the script just wasn't there. I just wanted take a stab at doing Conan and it's out of your control, you can only do so much I feel like I bled over, and over and over to do the best I could. I feel like we represented him very well. The movie sometimes, it fell short you can only show up as an actor and be the best you can be." www.syfy.com/syfywire/jason-momoa-blames-script-his-huge-conan-box-office-flop

I didn't think Momoa was a good Conan either. I thought he was decent in Bullet to the Head with Stallone. Like others have said, a good director is needed to get decent acting from him.

There is no shame in kneeling before me for I will one day be a god. -- Khalar Zym
Momoa was OK as Conan. Not great. Not perfect. Like the film.
One of the things that disappointed me was that Conan looked too practiced with his blade, whirling it around. Maybe it's a personal thing, but he came across as more trained where he should have been savage--an instinct fighter. His combat education has been the battlefield, not some swordmaster teaching him "moves".
To understand what I'm talking about, go and watch the beginning of Casino Royale (the one with Danial Craig). Bond fights like that. He's feral. Instinctual. Whatever it takes.
Arnold, to some degree, delivers that feeling of a savage fighter (even with the scene showing a swordmaster from Khitai teaching him and the scenes where he "practices"). Still, when Conan fights in that film, you can see that savage, untrained, powerful core coming through.
Momoa looked more like he was fencing--even sometimes like he was having fun. I could see that being Kull, but not Conan.
And...I liked the 2011 film more than most here, I think.

Momoa used too many “cool moves” in some of the sword sequences because directors think that’s what audiences want to see that, thanks to stuff like The Matrix. Arnold in Conan ‘82 also bought into the fancy moves too much; Subotai could have gutted Conan three times over while he held aloft that ridiculous sword! But the fight scenes had some convincing power to them, despite being ponderous and slow. Conan 2011 suffered from modern action movie sequences that are better suited to comic book nonsense you find in the MCU.

I wonder if Momoa likes the Conan character enough/combined with is new "star power", to maybe make something happen? His Netflix show Frontier is really good, maybe a short run series to see how the ratings/interest is?

If the scuttlebutt from last September is to be believed...no one. Considering Jason is now in the $1 billion box office club, hard to see the draw of returning to Conan, whether he likes the character or not.

I was still counting on the new show. Maybe we'll get lucky and Netflix will pick it up, especially if the script is that good.

Whenever I read the Conan books or read the comics I always imaged that the character would sound different from Arnie, never imagined the Arnie accent.
I think Momoa comes a little closer to what I imagine Conan would sound like when he opened his mouth.

The thing about Arnie, though, is that he does have an accent. And, Conan is supposed to have an accent. We don't know what accent that is. Some speculate a Celtic lilt. It was probably some language that doesn't survive to this modern era. But, at lease a heavy accent was represented that lends more believe-ability that the character had a barbarous accent. Momoa had no accent.

It is interesting one, I mean Conan's accent. I just never associated Arnie's Austrian accent with the literary character, but still a fan of Arnie's Conan, the first movie, and it is iconic. REH's Cimmerians are supposed to be proto Celtic.....proto Gaelic to be precise. On the other hand the fact that they existed thousands of years before recorded history would also mean that their accent would be different to say modern Irish or Scot's Gaelic. Far removed times and influences, Cimmerians would have spoken something related to Celtic/Gaelic languages as opposed to English with English/Latin influences. Both Arnie and Momoa have given their own own interpretation of Conan, look and accent ( or lack of accent ). Boot, I almost find myself in agreement with you on this one. Interestingly enough Momoa appeared as a part Irish part native American outlaw in Netflix's Frontier.
