Hello all,
Firstly im happy to have found this site and I hope we can all interact to bring a fan story that I have recently completed to the people who would most like to read it, obviously freely, I have no intention to make monetary gain from it.
I have a few questions and im sure you will also have some for me. So, first some background.
I read Howards Bran Mak Morn stories as a boy, back in the '80's and I was always intrigued by a few cryptic hints or occurrences as I grew up in the north f England and the Scottish Borders and I know the "landscape" for the stories quite well:
Where was the Tower of Trajan?
Where was the Isle of Swords?
Where was Dagons Barrow or Dagon Moor?
Where in Galloway did Bran Mak Morn Die?
How did his soul get into the Dark Man statue?
Where did the statue come from?
Where was the Dark Man hidden when the Vikings found it and carried it away?
What did the "song of the race" mean or represent?
Why was Bran Mak Morn not the main character in the stories?
So, after many years of wishing to read a story that answers all of these questions I decided to write the thing myself.
I now have a 38,000 word story spread over eight chapters with a prologue and epilogue, the writing of which has brought me much enjoyment as it has taken me on a trip through the stories and landscape of my youth once again. I have a twitter account set up where I am tweeting the reference materials and location links. You can visit most of them and one in particular, where the Dark Man gets hidden, actually has a local legend that a giant is buried there.
The first person to read this has stated that with these locations it would make a great movie or comic book.
RE Howard famously stated that the shade of Conan would stand at his shoulder at night and dictate the stories to him and that he couldn't keep up with the type writer, I know what he felt like because at times it felt as if he was at my shoulder guiding my hands on the keyboard!
So, please.
Can I upload a 38,000 page document here or should I upload it to its own website as a PDF?
Would anyone care to carry out some "Fan Illustration" for the cover, or for each chapter?
I have a domain name where I would like to upload the PDF but I know nothing of web design. Anyone want to do that?
I have the twitter account @riseofgrom where you can see I have started to post the "index" containing reference material, character details and the actual locations.
As I said, writing this story, and blending it in with actual locations and real folklore and legends has brought me great pleasure and shown just how much RE Howard knew about the Picts and the UK in general, without the internet!
If a staff member can guide my hand and let me know about uploading such a document here please get in touch.
Any questions please fire away, I don't mind giving out spoilers
Kind regards to you all,
McKenzie.
